I’m confused. Georgia Pacific sells plywood. Georgia Pacific sells OSB. Georgia Pacific reps at builder shows expound the virtues of both their sheathing products. GP I joists use OSB web material and the rep tells me that the OSB is better than plywood webs. So why do I consistently see full page Georgia Pacific advertising with tag lines like “Aren’t you glad you use plywood?” and “Real wood plywood. Don’t settle for substitutes.”??? [see FHB # 130 p 143 for example OR any back cover of JLC]
I frequently use GP OSB sheathing. It works fine under every weather condition I’ve seen my coastal New England climate dump on it. I spend a fair amount of time dispelling some of the misinformation surrounding OSB sheathing that my clients have. I show them that OSB is structural sound, doesn’t delaminate when it gets wet, and is regularly considered more ‘green’ than plywood. Is GP telling me that their OSB is somehow deficient or are they just shooting me in the back? My clients are beginning to wonder if I’m credible.
Has anyone noticed GP’s ads for “Real Wood Plywood”? What do you think?
Thanks,
Mike
