What should be in every homeowner’s toolbox?
My son just bought his first home. I would like to put together a toolbox of useful things for him. I am thinking the stuff I use the most – a cordless drill/screwdriver, a sabersaw, some tape measures, a level, a few clamps. More ideas about what to put in would be appreciated!

Circular saw and a shoot board.
Framing square (and simple how to’s)
Collapsible Horses.
Some taping tools.
Assorted hand tools
Instruction on the safe use and what not to do so he stays out of trouble.
Might point out a couple missing digits from what can happen.
Boy, don’t know when to stop.
Remind him about returning the tools to the same place,
Every single time. Done for the day? Put it away!
i don't know what a shoot board is? But I did look it up! what a nice way to get perfect edges. Something new for me to try!
Maybe I over did it.
Proper training and use of power tools should be thought of before you put together this “tool box”.
A circular saw is a great tool to have, however.
I’ve seen a “professional” (member of a framing crew) cut a sheet of plywood in half on horses…….with no support underneath the sheet. Finished the cut while stretched out over the sheet and fell with it between the horses. So maybe nix the circular saw.
Remember that smaller tools like a drill can also be susceptible to an ooops. The torque of a drill that bites will turn the drill instead of the bit. Worse yet is when it spins whatever it is you are drilling into.
Maybe included in that “tool box” could be a course at a community college to familiarize him with some knowledge.
Simplified, hand tools only, no power!
Best of luck.
Shoot board: a homemade guide for ripping or cutting sheet goods with a circular saw. Much more accurate than a rip guide included with the circular saw pkg.
I think you bring up a good point. He watched us work on houses all the time he was growing up, but he didn't actually handle tools much. I will start looking for a good basic how-to-use guide , that will be a big help. I added a simple electrical tester and a pair of channel lock pliers, too, from other comments. Such good thoughts! Thank you!
electrical outlet tester
Big enough pair of Channel Locks to remove P trap to clean out.
