Cracked board? You picky about what it sounds like? Turn up your geetar loud enough and it'll be fine. (I know nothing about pianos.)
PAHS Designer/Builder- Bury it!
GOOD LORD MAN!!! YOU MOVED AN OLD PIANO INTO YOUR HOUSE WHEN YOUR STILL WORKING ON IT!!!
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!
You will pay.
Oh you will pay.
Hey, anybody want an old piano? Sprere has one sitting on his back porch free for the taking. Or will in about 30days max.
Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha
Isn't that the one that was in the house when he moved in, making a big dip in the upstairs bedroom floor?
Nope, it came with the house. Just had been neglected. I did a web search and found out that it is actually a good maker.
Jus gotta pull out the key slips, shellac and wax them, some graphite spray on the pivots and tune her up. Gonna let the cracked sound board be that way, it's not fixable.

I have heard that sound borads can be fixed. Maybe not new but far better than current condition. It probably would entail taking the piano apart. You shove some glue in the cracks and clamp it together with hot melt blocks.
whats that stuff called..........
___weld, cant think of it, you know the stuff that everbody thinks will hold everything together.

Ok, how's about a Colby three pedal? Damn thing has been in the way for years but has family history so it's still around.
The cousin's would probably freak if I got rid of it.
Had to saw off a dead lower limb on the old maple in the front yard we all use to use to get up into the tree to climb. She about had a fit.
I can still hear her, 'You cut the limb! You cut the limb!' with this strange emotion in her voice. Kinda funny actually.
The things you do for family.
I can't tell ya about it...but, ya can get the serial# (not the patent dates) and google the piano's manufacturer name..find out about when they were producing and any other tidbits. Then take that info to PIANOBLUEBOOK.com (I think) and might get an idea.
If it don't take a toatl rebuild, it might be worth a tuning and clean up. IF NOTHING ELSE SAVE THE KEYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ebony and Ivory is getting scarce..to say the least. About all ya want off a junk piano would be those parts, some idgit (like me) would pay for them. The ivory will come off easily, the ebony can be a bit trickier.

Nope, won't fly..the difference of mass betwix teh JB and the spruce is a deadner..like a guitar top is fixed with a spline, sliver or splint, inlayed into the original crack, or a newly widened crack.

Duane...
Just make a new sound board.
Or is this like the cobbler's kids having no clothes ?

make a new SB? NOT in this lifetime..I could buy 5 pianos for what I'd charge myself.

We took an old piano apart and made a workbench for my Son out of it.
With all the works out of the thing, it isn't half bad. He has an overhead light and some screw storage bins on it. We put some 1/4" luan down as a work surface.
You can kinda see it in the background of the attached pic. Might be something you could do with that one...

workbench? hell no, it's a classic.
What brand did you destroy? Some are worth some serious bucks.

Don't know what brand it was, but it was in pretty bad shape.
Around here old pianos are a dime a dozen.A simple way to take measure of a country is to look at how many want in.......and how many want out. [Tony Blair, referring to the USA]
Sound board cracked?
You sure that is the same piano Robert Mitchum shot up in the movie " El Darado" wit John Wayne ? Happen to see it agian the other night. Look for some .44 cal. holes in it.
Dave
Some are worth some serious bucks.
And as boss said, dime a dozen!
Last one I had a chance at I took all the ivory and ebony off of it and turned the rest into firewood.
Not saying you dont have a valuable one on your hands though.
Going to antique auctions I see them sell for $10 to $1000, never know.
Doug
Yup, a "Wing an Sons" can be valuble..they were actually pretty good pianos, Some had a fourth pedal, IIRC it was a mandolin sound or banjo or sumpthin..god , I can't imagine a banjo sound..yikes, actual banjos are bad enough..LOL
I'll see how she rings when I get her tuned..that is a suck job..takes me almost all day. Just waitin for the sound board to explode as ya tweak it "just a bit" more..lol

My wife has a Marshall & Wendell upright she had restored a few years ago for about $1800. She did it because it has been in the family, and she hated to see it get sold for $10.
The piano restorer told us up front that upright pianos in general are not worth restoring because the end value is usually less than the cost of restoration. He said ours is probably a wash, although it would probably be tough to find a buyer.
Sentimental value is the most common reason he gets hired to restore them.
A cracked soundboard is probably a fatal flaw, as far as monetary value goes. What does that do to the sound?
John Svenson, builder, remodeler, NE Ohio
Fatal yes..sound? I dunno..it may not tune at all, without selfdestructing, 264 strings @ 200 (average) lbs is a lot of tension...the harp rail carries the load, the SB mostly reverbs the hamonic resonance..I am certain it'll "rattle" on a few notes..I hope it's all the same note at least.

I've seen worse, that played fine, and sounded damn funky.
