What to do with freebies?

Sphere | Posted in General Discussion on January 27, 2007 06:51am

We had an install last week of an agricultural type panel…Lexan/Polycarbonate extrusion. Like a green house covering.

Seems they padded the shipping crate with scraps about 14″ wide by 8′ long…smoked color with UV inhibitor..this stuff is 19mm thick.

I guess I have about 15 pcs. any good Ideas?

I can't post pics with this 'puter for some reason, but I can later on when I get told by the wife to vacate this chair and use the LT..LOL

Basically, the stuff is hollow channels...I can't for the life of me recall just what exactly it is called.

I may make a storm door insert or something along those lines, it is opaque enough to be a privacy type glazing. I also don't know what the R value is, but I'd guess, it is a good insulator.

Gimme a few hours to get some pics ....it is all laying oin the floor in the Living room...and I gotta come up with a plan b4 the DW gets back home.

            Looks Good

What is the brand of the hardware you used on that door?

Simple barn door hardware from either Tractor Supply or someplace similar.

Thats the look the guy was going for........on the other side of the doors he had gone completly industrial. House is slab on grade and he also took up all the carpet and was staining his floors, looked cool if thats your thing!  It's a look that seamed to be big in Austin Tx while I was there.

Panels with 3/4" "cores?" I would cut them into lengths of about 7", glue them into blocks, and use them to hold tools like screwdrivers, nut drivers, files, etc.

Likewise, you can use them to sort your parts and small hardware. Close off the ends, then remove maybe 2" of the face at one end. Tipping the panel would cause all the parts to slide toward the 'opening,' where you could pick out a few at a time.

Finally, small pieces (two 'tubes' with the sides removed to make an "H" cross section) can be used as rails for panels that can slide into place.

Do like the rest of us packrats do....you stack it in the back yard behind the shed......then every year or so you move it somewhere else.

  6. peteduffy | Jan 28, 2007 12:45am | #15

Cut them at an angle, drill a hole in the face of each channel, and make a giant pan flute.  Call it art and then you can leave it in your yard.

Could make music with that and an air compresser or weed blower, I'm guessing.

it's like deja vu all over again.i bought 8 pieces 15'long for a solarium roof[that's attached greenhouse to the b.i.]the packing crate yielded four 8' pieces and enough #1 2x3 to frame two hall closets.the sheets are leaning against my shop wall waiting to be....
solar panels with a plumbing header and drain would be super, but how?

  7. RedfordHenry | Jan 28, 2007 04:57am | #17

maze for dumb mice (to help them with their self esteem).  Marble racing (for dumb Cub Scouts, or Cub Scouts without fathers to build their pinewood racers).  Cold frame covers.  Ever heard of Freecycle.org?  Good place to unload potentially usable stuff.

  8. rez | Jan 28, 2007 06:19am | #18

So you are saying you have 15  14inch wide by 8 ft long panels composed of 3/4inch hollow extruded tubes which are made of 19mm thick walls of an opaque UV inhibitor smoke colored Lexan/polycarbonate which makes that thing pretty strong.

Dang man that's a 17 ft long wall or roof.

Good score. So what time you want me down there to pick it up? :o)

So far I think...accordian type room divider, cold frame lid, removeable window panels for the colder rooms of the house, or  a porch roof.

That'lll keep me thinking busy for awhile.
