What to pay the carpet guy ? ? ?

| Posted in General Discussion on May 20, 2001 11:13am

I am about to have 650 s/f of berber style carpet installed at the Cabin I am building in Alpine, AZ. I am planning on buying a medium grade carpet (+ padding & tack strips) at HD or Lowes and then taking it up in my truck. I live in the Phoenix area. I have a few potential carpet guys I have yet to get in touch with. What can I expect to pay for this ? It’s basically 3 bedrooms + loft and a stairway. The rest of the cabin is hardwood & ceramic tile. I am thinking somewhere in the neighborhood of $1.00 to $1.50 a square foot ? ? ? This is rural Arizona, not Los Angeles or Seattle. I would expect to pay more for the stairways. Thanks.

I am a building contractor in Canton a.and I don't think prices differ much in Arizona, but I am paying $3/ss.yydo install tack strip, pad and carpet. And they provide the tack strip. Steps are usually $5 to $7 per step. You only have about 72 ydyds install, so get someone out to do a small job like that and to drive to the cabin to do it, be prepared to pay a premium to get it done. My guys would probably charge about $100 just as a trip charge and then about $5/yd ydlay it. Good luck! JoltJoltinge, Colonial Construction.

*Recent condo remodel was $2. per yard labor. Quote for upcoming church remodel is $9. per yard labor and WE move the pews.

*Adam, if you are patient, you can lay the carpet yourself. I always found the hardest part was seaming, but then i paid a guy who only did that for a living and his looked the same as mine, so back to DIY. It's not like pouring a slab where you only get one shot at it. I rent a stretcher for $25 day; i forget what the seamer rented for, but certainly you'd have less than a hundred dollars in tack strip, tape and rental costs. The last room i did was 27 feet long and i'm only a fifth that length, so it can be done by one person, but a helper makes moving the stretcher and kicking carpet easier. Get a book and read first--it will save you repairing holes in the drywall or have our wall shift over. I suggest a bit heavier padding on the stairs, too.

*My Dad lives in Black Canyon City, north of Phoenix. The answer where he lives is "more". :-( For any given job, he can either hire a local, who knows he is the only game in town, or pay a Phoenix Contractor for a hundred mile round trip.Hope your experience is better than his always are, or that Splintergroupie's advice works for you.Dave

*can anyone tell me when someone becomes a carpenter and just not a helper anymore, does he have to prove something to become one?

*My husband has been in the fine fabric, furniture, carpet cleaning and protection business for many years and can advise on what kind of carpet to get for pretty much anyone's lifestyle - same for area rugs, and fabric of furniture. and wall coverings, etc. I know the question you pose, Adam, wasn't about that, but it just reminds me that if anyone here has a question about what I've mentioned, feel free to ask. He met alot of the guys here and I'm certain would be glad to give his professional input, including how to take care of fine furnishings, and carpets/rugs. Is this worthy of mentioning in a post by itself, do you suppose?
