what tool did you buy today

woodworker57 | Posted in Tools for Home Building on January 19, 2009 12:04pm

Not a tool, but installed some lumber racks to get stuff off of the floor.  It really helped, and much safer too.—-WW 57

    first-

IMO, lumber racks ARE a tool, and where are the pics of yours?

second- there's already a "what tool did you buy today" thread. Why re-invent the wheel? There's nothing wrong with starting a new thread, but chances are it'll get lost quickly if there's not a lot of interest

I thought I was posting it in that thread, but it showed up here, technically challenged to some degree-------WW 57

nice to see the fire extiguisher but I always have to ask: why put it near the exit?  I know what industry standard says, at all exits, but is it really useful there?  The way I figure it, the only time I'm going to fight a fire is when it's between me and the door, they're's firemen looking for fire's to put out and who am I to deny them that?  I put my fire-ext.'s at the furthest point from the doors.  I'm not going inside a burning building so why should I tempt myself by having that fire bottle right there?

        Just wondering, that's all.

        1. woodworker57 | Jan 19, 2009 06:29am | #10

I actually have 2 fire extinguishers, one at each door.  That location(s) is usually one of the only areas that are not cluttered, hence--accessibility.. That sounds real good, but truth is ,I am not sure why I put them there.  ----WW 57

          1. BryanSayer | Jan 21, 2009 03:41am | #15

I suspect that it is one of those things "everyone knows where the door is", hence if there is a fire extinguisher available, that is where it is going to be.And if it isn't, out the door with you!

        2. AitchKay | Jan 19, 2009 07:57am | #12

First, make sure you can get away, get out. Then assess the situation, and POSSIBLY go back in with the extinguisher.Worst case scenario: when you can get out easily, go in deeper to reach the extinguisher, then find you can't make it back out.AMFAitchKay

so you never call for help? don't bother with 911?

Fire training was a annual recurrent class I had in my prior life, so I've got at least he basics down.

If I'm out, I stay out.

in your scenario, you go back in with a bottle that was handy at the door and then it get's out of control and between you and the door and you got an empty bottle in your hand.  what do you do now?  put a fireman at risk to save you who thought you could put it out? That is of course if you bothered to call 911.

            If you're out, stay out.

You've got it, guy. I stand corrected. Always 911 first!AitchKay

I just purchased the Makita combo 18v lithium impact driver and drill driver from HD. I needed to replace my 12 volt Bosch impact driver.

I am loving it. Even lighter than the 12volt. No hanging clip though. I have to come up with an alternative.

nice combo--really lite. low run time, if it's the 1.5amp-hr., but really quick recharge. get a "big lugg" hook or something similar--there's a neat new loop-n-hook syle at Lee Valley tools.
