For the surface of a project table I’m building, I want to adhere a layer of 1/8 inch Masonite to plywood. Need something that doesn’t immediately bond on contact. The surface area is 30″ x 72.” Any suggestions?

Is your Masonite one side textured? This I think would bind well to ply with wood glue.
Either tempered or not I’d take a small pc of if it and use Titebond II or III and see how it works. Best figure a way to weight or clamp it totally down.
Never had to do either so beats me.
Heck, some trowel on adhesive would probably work.....
Your going to finish cut to size after the glue up?
Thanks for your input, Calvin. The masonite I'm using has a roughly textured underside. My concern with wood glue is that the surface area I'm gluing is large, and it takes quite awhile to evenly spread wood glue. So I worry that it would start to harden before I had a chance to get it fully spread. I think I need something that hardens slowly.
I would recommend contacting Franklin Adhesives, the maker of the complete Titebond line. Give them the info and please come back and post what you find.
Thanks and good luck.
Use Titebond 3. It's got a longer open time.
Thanks, Andy. Good to know.
I had a table like this once and I didn't glue the masonite at all. I just let it sit there. It didn't slip, and replaced when it became dinged up.
Hi Mike, I like your idea. My table will have a piece of 1x3 trim surrounding the surface that will keep the top in position. So maybe I don't need any adhesive at all. Or maybe just a few glops here and there.
I don't see a way to close this discussion, but I think I've got the info I need. Thanks to all.
Hey joe,
Glad all could help! Best of luck!
Just a suggestion, more so for others that stop by. Giving a complete description of the project up front will center the answers to the task at hand.
You’ll be happy with the masonite staying flat, I have pcs (1/8 “ - tempered, both sides smooth) that I use as floor protection on jobs as well as a smooth loading base for finished pcs in the van for transport and often pull them out for flat assembly of trim Or cab parts.
