What would you use…….

intrepidcat | Posted in General Discussion on January 13, 2009 07:37am

….to cut spring steel? Auger type spring steel, inside a thin walled galvanized pipe? And multiple cuts needed as there is a long run of this auger that I want to cut up into ~20′ lengths.

Recip saw failed, even with the best Lennox metal cutting blade I could find. Cut fine through the pipe but when it hit the spring steel auger what could move it just burned the blade up.

    Grinder.

Or metal cut-off blade in the circ saw. (abrasive)

      Thanks.

We're on the same track. I am going to rent a cut off saw and try it. If it works good enough I'll probably buy one.

      Any recommendations on the blade?

If you have a LOT of cuts to do, just buy a stack of the cheap ones from Harbor freight.Abrasive cutoff wheels don't last long, no matter the manufacturer. In your case, the thinner the blade, the faster and less troublesome, the cut. But the thin blades wear faster, as well.

          You pegged it, my friend.

Rented a cut off saw today for the weekend and tried it out this evening. Throws a lot of sparks and cuts thru the tube and the spring steel like butter.

I'll probably finish up on the augers I have exposed this weekend and later just go ahead and buy one for the rest of it.

          Thanks for everyone's help.

I actually kinda like Vince the ShamWow guy -- in small doses. LOL!

Whenever I go to home shows and the like, I always spend most of my time standing around watching all the hucksters purely for their entertainment value. For some reason, I get a kick out of 'em. And you gotta admire them for honing their "art" to fine edge.

And hey, they're made in Germany, and you know the Germans always make good stuff! ;-)

I like how he's wearing a headset in the commercial as if he's at a trade booth.

The first time I saw him, he reminded me of Milo from the Oblongs.  Don't know if you've ever seen that twisted cartoon, but it also has a perverse sort of appeal.

"The first time I saw him, he reminded me of Milo from the Oblongs."

Never heard of that toon. "Created by Angus Oblong, Jace Richdale. With Laraine Newman, Will Ferrell, Jean Smart. The misadventures of a goofy family deformed by toxic waste."

How could I have missed that? Off to Google to see if I can find some pirated vids. ;-)

Edit: OK - that's one of the most twisted, sick, politically incorrect collection of drivel I've ever seen.

            I loved it!

Over 40 years ago My wife and I bought a blender off a huckster on the boardwalk in Wildwood I believe. This blender got a lot of use, threw it out maybe two years ago for a brand new piece of junk.About 4 or 5 years after we bought the blender I wound up working partners with the huckster on a large construction job. Then found out he lived two blocks from my grandmother.Small world, by the way I hate shamwow and billy mayes in any size dose.

You say the blender lasted almost 40 years with a lot of use???

That guy was no huckster, he just believed in the excellence of his product :-)

My wife says the blender was called "Blender Queen". She did everything from puree fruits and vegetables for baby food to chopping ice.It actually still worked fine when she tossed it in the trash. After all those years it got chipped ,scratched etc.She bought a new one ,lasted a month before the blade slid off the shaft while chopping salad ingredients.Took that back for a refund.

          Vince the Shamwow guy.....

I think he is the President, CEO, VP of International Sales and only full-time employee of Shamwow, Inc.

DW gave me a box of Shamwow at Christmas - yes, she got twice as many by calling in the next 20 minutes - "Hey, we can't do this all day so call now.......

That being said, I had a tile job last week - 12x12 netting sheets of mosaic tile with about a gazillion pieces to the sheet.

Don't ask how I found out the glue used by the Italian tile manufacturer to adhere the tile to the netting was water soluble - but it was.

Wet saw cutting of the sheets quickly acquired a certain sense of urgency, and a greater sense of urgency to get the cut sheets dried off before the itty bitty pieces fell off the netting.

SHAMWOW to the rescue!  Worked like a champ - not to mention the entertainment value with my helper.  Remember "Shamwow! You'll say WOW everytime!"

"the Germans always make good stuff!"

            I hadn't.

I may have to go to a torch but dont want to because of the galvanized pipe I'd be cutting. Plasma cutter would be an expense I don't want to incur but I'd love to have one for other things.

What about a carbide abrasive blade instead?

Also, what about isolating movement inside the tube to trap the auger - like by foaming the cutting area with a hard curing Great Stuff?
