Answer
The brief history seems to be like this:
Hans Grohe founded the company. Later the son sold the brand to an american corporation and set up his own company again. This time round he cannot use hansgrohe, so he used the brand grohe instead. As for which is better, I have not had the chance to compare them.
But based on first touch alone, Grohe taps are somewhat smoother when turning them on/off compared to hansgrohe, but the price is very much different!
Hansgrohe is the original company created by Hans Grohe. His son created Grohe and made Hansgrohe specialise in showers and Grohe in mixers (or faucets). Then Klaus Grohe, current CEO of Hans Grohe took control of the company and Grohe got sold (and has been sold numerous times). Hansgrohe is still owned by the Grohe family, but Klau's side! The showers and taps by Hansgrohe are the best, no question.

A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
I won't get into the opinions on which is better, but for the most part the history posted is what I learned from doing business with both companies.

people may wonder water we talking about.
I plumb don't know what you are talking about.
I loved every one of the Grohe products I had. Haven't had Hansgrohe to compare.
Every bath I have been involved with in 17 years has had Grohe fixtures and heads installed. While some of the part numbers have changed I've never failed at getting the few replacement that have been needed.
When I built my own house I never looked at anything else and also included the kitchen.
I don't think you can go wrong with either, both are top notch products. As far as looks though, Hans Grohe is more contemporary in design. Grohe has some contemporary products but also has many that are a more traditional style.
As someone indicated, two different companies. My experience with Grohe hasn't been that spectacular. I put in a highend Ladylux in 1990. It worked well for maybe 7 years or so until it kind of just started misbehaving after 10 it got real bad (got real hard to turn faucet off and on) Ordered new parts (read expensive) after two years it was essentially shot again.
