A 1×8 become a 1×7 ?
I have bought 1×6 and got the standard 5 1/2″ x 3/4″.
Just picked up some 1×8 for some shelving for DW’s studio. Expexted to 7 1/2″ x 3/4″ and maybe some as little as 7 3/8″ but that was ok. I was going to rip them down to 7 1/4″ anyway.
WTF?
They were all 7 1/4″ to start with.
It it just buying at a big box or is this happening all over?

They've been 7 1/4" for the 20 years I've been buying them....
I was going to say the same thing. With PT, though, I've seen 2x8's be anywhere from 7" wide to 7-1/2".
Dimensional lumber is a half inch less than what it's called up to "8" and then it is 3/4 less from there on up--10 = 9-1/4", 12 = 11-1/4". (Should have posted this to OP, oh well.)
I've seen 2x12s that are less than 11.

Same for me Dave, they have always been between 7-1/4 & 7-3/8 since I've been buying them.

Normally 1x8 is way to narrow for shelving, so it has likely been over 20 years since I bought any 1x in that demension, and it was likely for roof sheathing repair or concrete forms.
This was a quicky shelf for DW to stack here containers of mosaic glass on. The containers are 7x7" and I wanted a 1/4" margin to keep them from setting right on the edge of the shelves. I but together the case from some ripped down crateing 1x12 I had laying around. Rabbeted for a 1/4 back and dado for 7 1/4" deep shelves.
I was thinking 7 3/8" would be just enough to joint both edges if I was carefull picking out the boards.
Wrong! They went in "as is" after cutting to lenght.
Lesson learned; take a tape with me to Lowes next time I have to sort through thier bins of anything. Another surprize I got was the 8' lenght was exactly 8', not the old 8'-3/8" you use to get so you could square the ends up and still have an 8' board.
Now if she will get this bright lime green thing out of my shop, I stop my whinning.
