When did this get here

Theodora | Posted in General Discussion on October 26, 2003 06:52am

Couple weeks ago. Just jump right in. “The Hearth” is the folder for nonsense and beer and hot buttered rum. I imagine you’ll have a lot to contribute with your current project. Wanna let us all decorate it here?

You got some ideas for the person in the “Where Do I buy Woodworking Tools” Thread?

You know, I don't know for sure, when the subject came up over at Breaktime, Andy didn't join in the conversaton http://forums.taunton.com/tp-breaktime/messages?msg=35796.1 , but I'm reasonable sure that he's highly trainable! He does love music......oh, and don't miss the Leonard Cohen lyrics near the end of that thread. Imerc,

Are you saying you have junk fabric in your yard? That's scary.

Is it in the form of a couch on your porch?

Are you saying you have ....nevermind.

            No lap dancing, nope.

p.s. I know how to fish.

            No couch on the porch...

            None in the yard either...

Since I don't let the dogs on the furniture as a lot of others don't either...

And you seem to think of me as an animal.. Redneck at that..

I just wanted to know what position of dog I had....

Was hoping for the lap dog slot.

I really wanna Alpaca.  Can we have one?  He is fuzzy, and warm, and we can take turns shaving the furr/hair, weave rugs and such. You can make your own flys too. Flies? Where is Robert Redford when you want him.

Tie my own flies... Have my own trout stream...

Got a Aussie and a Border collie... They're not allowed on the furiture, it's fabric. As much hair as they loose you'd think we'd have wall to wall in a few days..

BTW there's 2 gates on the way UP to the house.

"Robert Redford would be a cool neighbor."

Ya think? A bunch of others who think the same way paid millions to live up in Sundance. Meanwhile, down near the railroad tracks I get junk mail notes written by Robert Redford from environmental groups concerning the elk in Alaska or some such, while those of us who live in the valley below Sundance are poisoned by the local steel company that is exempted from clean air laws. We have one of the lowest smoking rates in the country, but our lung cancer is right near the top. Yet old Bob does nothing about his 'neighbors' who live a mile and couple of million dollars down the road.

Sorry for the rant, this is a sore point for me every time Robert Redford comes up. He's supposed to be such a big environmentalist but we live in his poor back yard/across the tracks and he does nothing locally.

Know what river you'll be fishin? Dry or wet fly?

After you've gone and experienced fly-fishing, read 'A River Runs Through It'. The movie didn't do it justice at all, and the story about when he was a lumberjack is hysterical.

You can read it now. It's one you'll want to reread later. It's a quick read, just a couple (three, if I recall correctly) short stories.

4 miles down the road are several hundred... Another 12 or so miles are 7,000 + a small percentage... They are every where around here. So much for that plan...

18 pounds...wow. Where did ya snag em?

In water... LOL!!! Actually it was 17lb 15oz 5 hours after catch. 6lb test... Not exactly any thing special by IGFA criteria. However, for the rest of us mere mortals... It was an impressive fish..

            In water... LOL!!!

This reminds me of a story while I was shopping at a grocery store in Illinois one day.

ME: (pointing) "Where do these shrimp come from?"

            Boy: "The ocean"

ME: "What I mean is, what waters to these shrimp come from?"

Boy: "The ocean is very big"

ME: "Okaaaaaaay, ....are these tiger shrimp?"

Boy: "You probably don't know what you are talking about, these shrimp still have their heads on."

ME: "Look you lil snit, I am from the Louisiana Gulf Coast and can smell salt water where I live, save it.  I have a pair boots older than you are.  Loose the attitude or the 150 people I am travelling with will not shop in this store again."

His eyes got as big as the shrimp, heads included. After that, the manager greated me at the store and wanted to know what items they could stock for us, that were not present, like peanut oil, to fry fish. (From the Wabash)

So, IMERC...what I meant was....in the waters in your back yard?.....lol....

Around here there are so many lakes, the bass fisherman always refer to which lake...see? Now I am not callin you a snit okay?....And wow on a 6# test.

            Gawd, travelling is complicated.

    Theo,

Decorate it? Now thats jumpin' the gun, yet......as my first creative contribution here let me say that.......

As in building, one has to see ten steps ahead in order to paint the entire picture.

I never really considered the decorating portion within my building portion.

Always seemed to me as I'm sure with so many other builders, that we create the spaces then decorate them, but maybe we should consider alternative ideas within our building if at all possible.

For those of you that don't know me (lucky you...lol) I'm restoring one of the oldest homes on Long Island here in NY. circa:1680. Been here a year in November.

Was on the market for well over a year and the offers kept falling through the minute the home inspectors told the clients what was involved....took a nut like me to buy it and tackle this mess.

I'm adding on large additions as well as restoring the existing structure.

Adding on first basically so my family has a nice place to live as I restore the existing.

The historic society has certain demands on me that I welcome.

I don't want to live in a museum and want to bring myself (personality) into this house that maybe one day other people will riff off of.

I see historic houses as just another "home"..but real old! Simple as that.

My main first concern was to get the caving in rubble rock foundation secure....DONE!

Next concern was to get he plumbing and electric guts updated...ON ITS WAY!

Another concern was to knock down additions that were put on here in the past 50-75 years that was built with no level of consciousness, but rather with self centeredness.......DONE!

I'm far from wealthy so I can't do "everything" I think should be done to the nines.......hence, a lot of creative ideas and the labor is purely my own this year with helpers(27 years a renovator/builder).

Decorating ideas? Not too many yet....just ordered Marvin windows with wood exteriors and wood jamb liners rather than the plastic fake looking liners....so....window treatments will be a concern.

The existing landscaping outside the 12 over 12 windows are mainly old growth trees and the ground is presently clay mud...makes the bottoms of my work boots after a rain look like a ton of dog do not to mention the dirt all over the floors in my house no matter how hard I try to scrape em' off...don't you pity my wife? she keeps saying as she vacuums, "why bother"?..lol.

Floors are and will remain wide totally uneven gapped face nailed pine.

Maybe this is too soon to bring all this up.....OK OK...just sayin' howdy!

    Be well

      Howdy Andy

and yes I pity your wife.  I have a parrot and say the same thing when I vaccum.

At least you have given her some nice living space.

Major points on that move. I can sure appreciate your effort on this house. Looking forward to pics, where ever you post them.

Andy- What a fabulous project! I know that I'm not alone in looking forward to hearing about your progress.

Glad to see your honesty about builders creating a space and then (usually someone else) decorates it. My words in parens, not yours. IMHO, these should go hand in hand. Maybe this time you might want to gain some perspective by, where appropriate, considering them simultaneously since you are not working under someone elses time constraints.

Throw things our way and you will get some goods ideas and lots of food for thought.

Thanks Andy. Your house is going to have a real spirit that you need to share with us. Its historic spirit, and the one you add to it, so stop in and report progress over here with us anytime the house inspires you!

I guess I think Inspired House isn't really going to be about "decorating" houses, in a sense that's it's something you do to a shell after it's finished, but about creating a home that combines the nature and the spirit of the structure itself with the "decorative" choices we make."Our whole American way of life is a great war of ideas, and librarians are the arms dealers selling weapons to both sides."-James Quinn

Heres some pic of my project.

The pic of the pool to the house was when I moved here about a year ago.

We never even knew there was a pool back there the weeds were so overgrown.

Was awesome to swim in this summer but still needs work around it.

Theres a pic here of my new helper Adil.....and Afghani architect student who took this year off to apprentice. I called that shot "the wicked witch of the far east"....lol

The section I knocked down wasn't part of the original house and was disgusting.

And the one in front of the loader is of me and my puppy "Chakra" last winter. She's a Belgium Tervurian Shepard and is out side on the site every day with us.

sorry bout that last pic..I forgot to resize it.

The vanity is in the one bathroom of the house I ripped out and redid.

The vanity cab I found at an antique store and the sink I had a potter from Vermont throw for me...The wainscotting is a full 3/4" that I backprimed with oil base paint. The final color will be a pale green..the floor tile is a 4x4 tumbled marble and the wall tile in the shower area is a hand made crackled glazed tile.

More pic to come soon....I have the living part of the first floor framed....next is to frame the 30x30' two story

shop (I told my wife it was a 3 car garage..heh heh). Then the second story.

ooo Chakra is adorable.  *sigh* I want another dog and the Belgium Ts are high on my list.  What are some of her characteristics?  I'm asking questions now 'cause I didn't when I picked up Red Sonja from the pound.

You are putting some SERIOUS work into your place.  Do you plan on staying in this house or are you making it pretty for the next owners? This jobless recovery has done more to promote the consumption of exquisite chocolate than the finest chocolatier.  Cost be damned.

I think your plans are going to look great - and you really scored when you found a pool in that condition covered by weeds! The house did look better once you took those old additions off, too.

            Thanks

The additions were super lame, especially inside. Someone built it for a garage than someone else turned it into a den and a kitchen...looked so stupid inside and it leaked everywhere and wasnt vented anywhere and not even a C.O for it which I had to deal with until I decieded to knock it down.......hence no need for a C.O.

Hey--beautiful Belgian Tervuren (the dog).    Whose is he?  :-)

She's mine. I found her on line. HAd her shipped from North western Canada to LGA airport when she was about four months old.

Turned out shes show quality not that I care about that but what the heck.....

Cool thing bout' buying stuff from Canada is the exchange rate. She ended up costing me about $450 US dollars including the airfare.

I had some trainer (Sit happens) from a franchise come here yesterday thats supposed to perform miracles. He brought his two dogs and showed me what he can do. Blew me away...totally!!!!! So did his price...yikes! $1200 which included a $200 collar that has a remote to a cell phone looking handheld that helps train the dog. No, not shocking her...just different levels of an annoying feeling.

I called and said it was too much money for me but I am still considering it cause Chakra is such a special loveable pooch....eeeeeeeeeee$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

Yes, Belgians are awesome.  I have Malinois--the short haired version of the Tervs--they're all rescues.

You don't need a fancy trainer, but I do strongly recommend going to some training classes.  Belgians are really smart and usually WANT to work, so they are easy to train.  However, if you don't know how (don't know what your past dog experience has been) you can get into some real trouble because they ARE so smart.

            She's beautiful.  Enjoy her!  :-)

Nice, basic training that doesn't cost a lot can do the same thing as the fancy-dancy $$$ training as long as you're putting in the energy (i suspect you would be).  I recommend training for all dogs - makes them happy - especially if they're smart dogs that need to know what their work is. If you can't play a sport, be one.
