When to replace your compound mitre saw?

ramertt | Posted in General Discussion on December 20, 2008 09:00am

Hey guys on a recent remodel I noticed my compound mitre saw was not cutting smooth even though I had changed out the blade.  After further investigation I noticed that when the blade came to a stop there was a slight, very slight, wobble at the end of the blade rotation.  The cabinet maker on the job said the saw is done because the arbor is bent.  Is this true? Granted I had the saw for over 10 years and its been a great saw, its just hard to believe its time to get a new one.

Dedicate the new one to trim only, and use the old one for framing and other heavy cutting, where it may get banged around.

Could be a bearing getting tired. If it's a good quality saw in every other way you could look into Re & Re the arbor bearings. Lube the drive gears while you have it apart too.

...or you could just give it to me....

Not necessarily a bent arbor. Might first try replacing the washer(s) that hold the blade.

Change the blade again and also mount it in another saw for an easy check for wobble.

I had a wobble condition on a brand new LS1320 which was a warped blade.

I've also had blades that were extremely sharp but not accurately ground so the cut was bad.

Also had a bad set of blade washers that when tightened caused blade wobble. Changed those puppies and the wobble was gone.

Thanks! I will give it a shot and change out the washers.    At this point it was an excuse to purchase a new saw! Which I did.  Like the previous reader had suggested I am keeping the old saw for framing.

I just replaced my trusty Hitachi C8F--I've had that rascal for over 11 years.  It was not cutting true on both sides of the fence.  Time to go.

Bought a new one and the slide was off 90 degrees!  A full 16th at the end of the run!  Got another.  Same problem.  Got another.  Same problem.  My supplier tells me he went though 8 of the boxes and all had this problem.  The C8F is made in China.  The C10 is still made in Japan.

        Got the C10.

Is it a Crapsman??   They come that way out of the box!  The arbor also usually goes in and out 1/16" or so.

Most likely it's an arbor shaft bearing. Don't keep running the saw. If a bearing seizes it may gaul the housing. I have a Bosch that lost the bearing at the far end of the arbor, same symptoms you described. It was a bit of a job to get to. You had to dismantle the saw head completely. Mine is a press fit roller style bearing. It fits in the end cap at the far end of the motor. This is a weak link in many miter saws as well as other tools, these days. The saw should be back to new with the bearing replacement.

The bearing at the blade end is usually nice and beefy. Why they put a dinky roller at the opposite end is a mystery to me. If it gets hot and melts the housing, or you ding it removing the old bearing, you have to buy a new motor housing. The bearings are common and available at any supplier. Too bad they didn't go up one size on the Bosch so a sealed bearing could go in. It might have cost them an extra 50 cents.

Beat it to fit / Paint it to match

You don't say what brand, but most of these are not direct drive - they have a belt drive coupling between motor arbor and blade arbor. The blade arbor is carried in a bearing or a bushing. The DW models are known for wearing out the bushing fairly fast and you can get a replacement kit.

Thanks, its a DW.  Ive had it for over ten years no problems.  I will look into the kit!
