How do I know if I need to repoint the exterior of my house’s fieldstone foundation? A patio contractor is repointing on side of it where a patio is being installed, excavating down 1.5 feet and repointing. On one side of the house I am wondering if I should have them do the same? This side has 2 windows and a little bay window and water seems to come off the roof and into my basement – not a ton of water, but in heavy rains there is water. The interior of the foundation is in good shape. How do I know if repointing the exterior is something I should do? Attached is a picture (for whatever that is worth)
Thanks, Joe, Boston

Focused on brick, but similar things to consider.
The condition of the wall will determine if repointing is needed.
The water is worth putting some effort into controlling.
you can catch and divert water from the roof using gutters,
Or work on improving the grade so surface water runs away from the house.
Or both.
