Does anybody remember when that issue was where an apartment over a garage was featured? I tried to find it on the site, but couldn’t get the right prompts for the server to find it for me. My dad may do a similar project.
I think it was between 2000 and 2004, give or take.
Thanks, in advance.

I remember seeing it in the More Small Houses book.
I'll go check to see if an issue/date was given.
Adventures in Home Building
An online journal covering the preparation and construction of our new home.
No date on the article in the book. Title was "The garage as starter home" or something like that.
Article said that Andy Engle took the pictures, maybe he's around and can answer?

Dec.97/Jan 98 has "Garage as Starter Home"
Don't know if that is what you wanted or not.

That date would coincide with the printing date of the book. That must be da one!

Wasn't the driveway recycled brick. Very cool project.
Beer was created so carpenters wouldn't rule the world.
I'm not sure about the driveway. I just remembered the article as being interesting and had the title and date written on a list of articles I used when designing and building our house.

That was the year I built my first home - a garage with apartment starter - thanks to FHB for the idea!
Treat every person you meet like you will know them the rest of your life - you just might!
I edited that a long, long time ago. I'd guess it ran in '97 or '98. Ken Troupe was the author. Funny - I just spoke with him yesterday. He's now doing some great work in Charleston, SC. http://www.yestermorrow.net is his website.

thanks for the help! that sounds like the one. now the trick is to dig it up! as for your sign-off "Never try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig." Robert A. Heinlein that reminded me of soemthing a childhood development specialist warned me about, in regard to trying to negotiate with toddlers: don't try to wrestle a pig- the pig loves it and you just get dirty.-m
The state building inspector's office in Hampton, NJ, used to have a similar one about mud wrestling a pig being like arguing with the inspector.Andy

What an irony, I was just thinking about this house on the way home from work today. I posted to you a couple of weeks ago about "Winterpeg". Well as Joe Litsubeck (sorry I can't spell that name right from memory)so eloquently stated a year or so ago, we (Canadians) have two seasons, winter and last winter. Any how I thought you have been north somewhat because I thought I remembered you did Ken Troupe's article for the mag.
I also told my class toady(I teach at the local college too) about your article with your method of using rigid foam and plywood on the floor for a basement finish. I also told them that a few months later MIke Holmes of HGTV Canada did one basically the same and passed it off as his own. Maybe he will sprout the Andy Engel beard next !
Have a great day, eh

There are no original ideas anymore. I got most of the info to do basements from Joe L.
BTW, Ken did move south - Charleston, S.C.
I visited Sudbury to shoot that house in June or July '97. Tough shooting the interior. First off, it was so basically one room, so variety was hard to come by. And because there were no other rooms to set up the camera in, I couldn't get a long overall view from anywhere. The weather was glorious, though, and I got some good outside shots.
I couldn't believe how light it was there at 10 PM. Saw my first IMAX there, too. Andy

I'll tell you it isn't too light around 10 pm now. Ken's house is in a town we used to call Valley East until they and my town of Onaping and 6 others were forced to amalgamate into the City of Greater Sudbury by the Ontario Government. We were suppossed to get better services and lower taxes. It didn't quite pan out!
I guess you went to the Imax at Science North. I have to say that even with the risk of awakening the California Canada Hater that Imax is annother Canadian invention! Right up there with the Robertson screw and basketball! Oh ya of course Joe L is a canuck too!
Have a great day at the Roxbury!

The Ken Troupe house is in issue 113. The guy used to be president of the local homebuilder association. I saw him at the local home show and he had a few copies of the issue at his booth. I thought crap, I wanted to be the first from the area to get a house into finehomebuilding. Local legend has it that his then fiance no wife was making good coin in South Caralina so he packed up and moved south.
The garage/house is about a half hour from where I live.
Have a good day
