Where do you buy your screws?

JMadson | Posted in General Discussion on February 25, 2008 04:32am

I’m tired of buying screws at HD and Lowes. I want bigger quantities at cheaper prices. From wood screws to machines screws, big, small, all kinds.

If you have an on-line source, I would love to know it.

Thanks,
Joe

Now you will get the joy of using good screws. You will never go back.

That should keep you screwing around for a long time.

Ok, quit screwin with me. ;)

I've been using spax screws for a while but they're expensive and they don't come in large quantities. This should be about a six month supply for me.

I told you to buy from CSH.

I knew you would screw it up.

I checked out their site, but I was having a hard time with it (it was probably just me). McFeely's site was great and I got a free gift pack because I bought so much.

I just got hooked on those nylan coated screws about 4 years ago.

I wish they came in a straight square drive instead of the combo.

Wood screws from either Rockler or http://www.redtopscrews.com

I have found Tractor Supply Co. (TSC) a good place to buy washers, nuts and bolts. Three different grades, all sold by the pound out of bulk bins.

Hardware store items have become oriented toward a lower price point. I figure it costs me 1/2 hour of time to recover from a sheared screw head. At that price, I can afford a few more cents per screw.

  5. Billy | Feb 25, 2008 05:56am | #7

McFeely's is great.  After you use them you'll realize what carp they sell as screws at HD and Lowes.  You'll love the square drive, too.

    Billy

    1. jamiep | Mar 05, 2008 06:23am | #32

What people refer to as "square drive" are actually "Robertson" screws. Here in Canada, they are the standard. You would be hard-pressed to find screws that aren't Robbies except for drywall screws anywhere -- Even at Home Depot.Stop calling them square drive. They're Robertson (or Robbies).

We buy our screws from Bear Supply right there in Chicago.

They are not sheetrock screws(not that there is anything wrong with sheetrock screws) but black screws.

We get them in 25 lb. boxes, very good screws, you can get  them in either square or phillips drive.

You should be able to get them in about any length.

Call and request a catalog or do so on line. Seeings how your close shipping shouldnt be terrible.

nylan coated , type 17 point.

    I buy cases of 1 1 /4", 1 5/8, 2" , 2 1/2" and 3".

They self tap, countersink, they rarely split the wood and I have driven them into oak without pilot holes.

    It's our go to screw.

Can't be used with treated. For that we use GRK (sp?).

On composite to composite the GRK would snap, these screws won't.

They are a combo drive. We only use a square drive bit to drive them. I wish they were straight square drive. Still they are worth a look see.

Someone else mentioned Fastenal yesterday. I went to their site and went looking for a local store and was surprised to find out that I'm 10 minutes away from one.

I'll check it out today. Thanks

I think you'll like it since the folks are a bit more knowledgeable and can usually get "special " stuff in a day or two.. also I don't know if it matters but they also carry Craftsman tools and Husqvarna lawn equipment.

For brass hardware type screws, I use Jamestown distributors,
    http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/main.do?engine=adwords!6456&keyword=jamestown_distributor

Boat building/marine supply are great sources for hardware that see harsh conditions.
