Which Nail Gun For Installing 1 x 4 Fir Decking
As described in a previous post, I will be replacing the 1 x 4 Fir Deck boards on my 36 year old 12′ X 12′ deck which is attached to my house. The joists are PT and in good shape. I realize that there are better options maintenance-wise but I have decided to use 1 x 4 Fir again. The current deck boards are attached with 2 1/2″ spiral shank nails. After removing just one damaged board I bought a DuckBill to remove the rest of the boards.
From what I have read, screws are preferable to nails for securing the deck boards. I estimate that I will need to use approximately 850 screws. Based on the fact that the nails have done the job for 36 years and I won’t be around in 36 years I am reconsidering using nails.
I own a compressor and would appreciate some guidance on nail guns that I could use for this project.
Thank You
P.S. While doing some internet searching I saw some posts (FHB had one) where some installations were done using finish nails. I do have a 15 gauge finish nail gun that I have used around the house. I used SS nails for outdoor nailing. Anybody have any experience using finish nails for installing wood deck boards?

a box of stainless screws is probably less expensive than a new nail gun and a box of nails.
