You know those inline heaters that goes on the jet piping for those whirlpool bath tubs designed to keep the water warm? Has anyone installed those? If so read on, otherwise ignore.
I never installed one of these things before and the HO i’m doing it for insists on having it. It’s for an American Standard Elite model, the upper end one with the seat and corner installation. Having never installed one of these inline heaters before I read the instructions carefully.
I turned it on tonight and all seemed fine, jets were working, then I felt this spraying of water. The joint where the existing pump piping meets the heater (that slip nut joint, the one that goes into the heater) was gushing water. So much so that the ceiling below got soaked and flooded and water was streaming thru a crack in the ceiing plaster. I estimate about 3 to 5 gallons of water dumped onto the ceiling and sprayed all over the place behind the access panel.
To install this thing I took the section of piping out of the jet piping and replaced it with the heater. All the nuts are tight, can’t be turned anymore.
Is there something special about installing these things that maybe the directions leftout? Are you supposed to seal the pipe threads where the slip nut attaches? Is there supposed to be a rubber gasket/washer some where (there wasn’t any that I saw)?
