We are doing siding. know white cedar ages silver but were told western red cedar also ages silver. is this correct as we only want to side the house once ? also, is there a difference in color aging between eastern and western red cedar. where can we get preassembled panels of white cedar? thanks.

Both Red Cedar & WC weather to whatever color they feel like, from a light silver grey to blotchy black for WC and A slightly darker grey to Blotcy black for Reds, it deppends on the exposure, te amount of sun , any bleaching effects in the air (salt mist on Cape Cod, acid rain, etc)
The only way to get the colr you want is to stain the shingles.....
*Mike is right JAR. I'm speaking from personal experience and looking at my red cedar fence and my neighbors white cedar fence. If you're lucky you get an even grey, if you're unlucky then you end up with a blotchy black grey kinda thing (ugly as sin). My neighbor and I have both. Stain your shingles if you want to avoid hassle later on. I have handsplit western red cedar for siding. I stained it with a light semi-transparent stain to try and keep as much original color as possible. Good luck!Gaby
*I agree with the previous posts ......if you like the silver color, try Cabot's bleaching oil. Dip the shingles before installing. If you use panels, and they are not prestained, stain them all sides before installation. You should find that they weather much more uniformly and last longer, too.
