Who Thinks Bob Vila has earned respec…

Old Bob is still selling for Sears, huh? I would expect such a mover/shaker to have moved to a better moving line of products, i.e. DeWalt or Makita. The way the cordless DW’s have taken over (keepin’ up with the Jonses carpenter), I can’t see him making a real dime off a Craftsman. Especially not with a money back guarantee. My brother and brother in law love to use/abuse craftsman, just to get a knew one. I don’t know, since I haven’t bought Sears (waaaay over priced in our market) in at least ten+ years. If Sears ever figures out what ride Bob’s been taking them for, his show will FINALLY be over!! Please, dear God, if you can hear my one prayer….

    All right guys!

As I was trying to find something to watch this weekend that wasn't sports, politics, or violent, I started paying attention to a BV show. He was just starting the series in Charleston. It occured to me,
more than any other group of shows I have ever seen
, Bob has exposed the general public to the vast and endangered built heritage of this country. So what if he is a lousy GC and can't hold a hammer? He DOES continually make the case for historic preservation, renovation, and rehabilitation. He has done an incredible job of bringing these ideas to the masses, and I would bet, brought the lot of YOU a lot more work. So what if his clients have more money than brains? I'm sure YOU would tell them "no, don't buy those cool gwidgets, save your money for retirement!" I wouldn't spend that kind of money either, but then, I wouldn't allow a bozo with a camera in my house in the first place.

I don't like a lot of the things that go on in these shows, from quality to design and environmental sloppiness, but I haven't promoted and encouraged preservation of our national architectural heritage to millions, so I won't throw stones.

Sorry if this seems like ranting, but it is time to get back to work.

    Mondayly, Lisa

*Alan, you must be related to the bum. oh,yeah-he's a pioneer alright-in the art of b.s. Furthermore, if you used any of "Bob's" ideas,I can only wonder what your house looks like. C'mon, Alan, cut the lawywer crap and see him for what he really is.

      1. Jim_Yates | Feb 15, 1999 11:17pm | #27

*AMEN! Johnny M. BV is a classic example of "it's not what you know but who you know".

*We call him `Truss' from the show about a featured Adirondak Lodge in which he looks at the famed post and beam construction and declares,These are the trusses, right? But all kidding aside, how many of us could or would want to do what he does?

Anyone can read my story about government abuse in my post under thread..."what are carpenters getting paid in your area".

Part of the effects of that time was that I could not build for myself, suffice it to say...

But, I could build through Bob Vila. And so what if I knew, or thought I knew more than anyone on that show.

But, lets face it, Bob and the rest of them are just people. Just someone who was a pioneer in their field. Those who may follow, or seek other course have that footprint to re-examine, if necessary.

For me, having that type show available to me in the background of my activities, rather than the weather channel, or Prevue, has allowed me the opportunity to be bombarded with ideas. And later on I have used either those ideas, or others stemming therefrom.

I dont judge Bob Vila as anything more than someone who hosts a home improvement show. And I have seen profit because of that type of show.

    Hope this helps.

*Alan, I agree at least Bob never pretented to be doing the work himself. You always know the pros are right out front.Vince

*My neighbor tells me once on the old TOH a guy fell off the roof right at the edge of camera range. Then the camera zooms in and they cut the segment short. Anyone else seen this? I don't remeber it.-Rob

*Hi AdirondackJack.I dont get your question, please rephrase it.Also, whats the scoop with your new preface? Is lumber tosser me? Who are the others, and why?Lastly, between you and me, it doesnt seem, at this point, that my Bob Vila support thread is going to get much in the way of positive , huh? Is this going to turn out to be one of those...Poor Bob, so what? stories...Wont someone out there care?Hope this helps.

*Alan,Must I?OkThe sub heading lists my companys and self inflicted "nicknames of the day"Again, I am done adding "___ ____" to any of my posts and will celebrate with a party for all at my place the day I can do a site search and find "___ ____ " mentioned only in deeply archived "by special request only" FHB tape backupsAny Questions,Jack : )

*Hi AdirondackJack. So, do you mean to say that lumber tosser is you?How does it feel? And do you also mean to say that flockless shepherd is also you?I like that. Reminds me of that saying...I am King of nothing, but KING nonetheless!Your welcome to self inflict on that one, should you be so inclined.Hope this helps.

*RJT, b Darkness At Noon stands as an unequaled fictional portrayal of the nightmare politics of our time. Its hero is an aging revolutionary, imprisoned and psychologically tortured by the Party to which he has dedicated his life. As the pressure to confess preposterous crimes increases, he re-lives a career that embodies the terrible ironies and human betrayals of a totalitarian movement masking itself as an instrument of deliverance. Almost unbearably vivid in its depiction of one man's solitary agony, Darkness At Noon asks questions about ends and means that have relevance not only for the past but for the perilous present. It is--as the Times Literary Supplement has declared--"A remarkable book, b a grimly fascinating interpretation of the logic of the Russian Revolution, indeed of b all revolutionary dictatorships, b and at the same time b a tense and subtly intellectualized drama..."Its a jungle out there,Jack : )

*Look its late and I have to pick up guys at 7:30 in the morning so this will be brief.God Bless Bob Vila. If it weren't for him I would not be able to turn to TLC on saturday at 10:00 a.m. and watch 7 straight hours of home building/ home remodeling / home repair. Most of it sucks, but what the hell else other than the Weather Channel is so compelling. I am amused more often than not with what they are doing, but I do get ideas.Hell, Bob is one of the better ones. Not only are Dean and the bimbo on, but JoJo has her own show. How about the Furniture Guys as "Men in Tool Belts"? They are the worst, but funny. Has anyone ragged on Steve of TOH, LIGHT WEIGHT AT BEST.I remember the great raging Norm controversies on woodworking sites. Maybe he does have every tool in the book, and maybe he hung up his Jack Plane, but it is still more interesting than most T.V. and admit it, you only no to bitch because you watch.

*If you guys want to watch a real carpenter in action, tune into "The Old Yankee Carpenter".Screw Bob and his corny crews! It's comedy at it's worst!Blue"Forget about World Peace...Visualize using your turn signal."

          11. Guest_ | Feb 13, 1999 04:32am | #14

*NOTE ON CONTENT/CONTEXT:I want to address specifically the sentence containing words as follows:..."Your welcome to self-inflict on that one, should you be so inclined"...I, alan joseph samson, did not mean to say, and does still not mean to say anything by the combination of words used. The combination of words, as I look at them, could mean anything. So, maybe, I got what I wanted. I did not mean to say anything, and so then, anything is what I got.So, I am taking those words back. I am not retracting, in any way, it is just those words are words which got away from me, and I shouldnt be punished. In fact, I think I may be worthy of praise, for the way I tried to pick up on referencing AdirondackJack's usage of "self-inflicted". Having made this note, I sure would like it if AdirondackJack could get lumber tosser back into his titles...anyone else agree?Hope this helps.

*b Skitsophrenia returns....alan...are you, by chance, enamored with law and or the "use and meaning of words".....Has the San Diego fiasco impacted your every move through life....Just never know where you're coming from.....do you?Your buddy,Jack : )

          13. Guest_ | Feb 13, 1999 07:18am | #16

*... depends on what your definition of "is" is ...Alan, this is the finest piece of lawyerly obfuscation I have seen in a while.

          14. Guest_ | Feb 13, 1999 08:38pm | #17

*Hi AdirondackJack.I like Tracey Ullman saying..."...I'm a paid schizonphrenic!"...To be candid, buddy, your usage of words which seemed to presume my having a "skirt" may have influenced the tone of my demeanor. But I dont think so.I do like to play with words on this here machine. And I noticed by your Literary Commentary about Darkness at Noon that you are surprisingly skilled in the way of words. So, as we play, lets be careful please. Now will you help me gather support for Bob Vila?

          15. Guest_ | Feb 13, 1999 08:43pm | #18

*Who's the Old Yankee Carpenter? Do you mean Norm? I like Norm and think he's a good carpenter and a good woodworker, but if you want to start a cat fight go to Fine Woodworking and post that you think Norm is the best.I guess we're all a bunch of cranky a--holes.

          16. Guest_ | Feb 13, 1999 08:47pm | #19

*Thanks andrew d..But now I am wondering if I need to add another notice that my saying..."those words are words which got away from me, and I shouldnt be punished."...did not mean to say anything regarding recent events for President Clinton. You see, the fact is, no, not the fact, the stubborn fact is...well, no, not the stubborn fact, ...the allusive fact is...and so on.Is it okay to talk about The White House that President Clinton is building on this thread? I heard he likes Bob Vila.

*Boy, what tradesman doesn't respect Bob's smarmy appreciation of jobs below his useful-to mankind station of teevee personality. Or, his wonderfully endearing air of condescension with the glibly impaired. I'm pretty sure he is really everybody's favorite brother-in-law, who has gotten the use of all our craftsman tools, without ever having actually held one, or much less, return them !
