Just finished this up tonight, well almost finished, I want to put one more coat of finish on the outside, doors, and the earing holders.
The box is walnut with a Curly Maple and Lyptus top/bottom pieces. The drawers are made of Purple Heart with Paduk bottoms. The little drawer has velvet covered foam to hold rings, the Paduk slide out pieces are drilled to store her earings, and there is one piece of wood wrapped in velvet to go under the necklace side.
The finish is as of now, 7 coats of Tung Oil finish, Came out smooth as a baby’s
, Thanks RW
I’m not sold on the brass feet, what do you guys think?&
#160; Keep them or take them off?
You’ll also notice the brass posts for necklaces at the top are not at the same height, Whoops…
Other then that I’m pretty proud of this little box

Nice work. I wish I had the time to get up to my boss's shop and make something like that for my wife.
Neil
I think it looks great, I'm sure the little woman will be happy!
I don't mind the brass feet, I'd leave em.
Doug
Uhh you staggerd the heights because necklaces are different lengths.:) At least that's what I would say.
Nice work.

That's what came to mind 2 seconds after I realized I goofed.... I did cause I measured some of your necklace's......
didn't think she'd buy it though ;)
Building it was quick, finishing it took forever
Nice work, It's always great to build something for a special person, I'll bet you had fun working on it.
Great work.
Just yesterday overheard DW commenting to a friend that the best presents were things DH made for her.
BTW, whichever of your grand-daughters or great grand-daughters gets it ---- by then it will be priceless. Be sure to write something on the bottom when you made it and why - I've gotten lazy and after a few times carving a script, now just type, print, and put it on the bottom under a piece of acrylic sheet; however, even a penciled note will be priceless to them.
Edit - brass feet -- My DW would say they only allow for dust bunnies, IMHO, in deferring to my DW, have opted for full surface cork pads (but I get the cork free off old pallets or wallboards) .

Thats a good idea, going to have to put something on the bottom tomorrow
Go to an engraver and have them make a little brass name plate with some smooshy saying on like:
from Aloyisious with all my Love
Women love that fake sincerity stuff!!
Nice work kid!!
Merry Christmas to you and your loverly Bride!!!

Nice! I like the feet and second Mr. T'd recommendation to go to an engraver/trophy shop.
I called the trophy shop, same guys who engraved the hammers I gave at the wedding (thanks Dieselpig)
Going to have
For My Wife, On Our First Christmas, Love Neil, December 25th 2005 engraved on a brass plate and put on the bottom.
include her name on that plate
or she might think you've forgotten it already
oh, yeah
I meant to tell you it looks great. Mrs. CAG should be very happy
see, the memory still works; its just getting a little slow
I agree on adding her name to the plate. And change the date to 12-25-05 to save letters so you can afford her name.
Did you consider piano hinges?

Personal opionion, I'm not a big fan of piano hinges, not to mention, all those screws...
Her name is a good idea
Yeah, that's the spirit! Imagine when the grandkids are grown and happen onto that box? Nothing better than family made heirlooms.
A few years ago I built some cabinets for some really great folks up the road. Really nice log cabin on a lake. Seriously nice family. They went a little overboard every step along the way and I know they are still doing without quite a few finishing touches because the cabinetry was more expensive than they planned. Anyways, I had a plaque made that said "cabinets built for ______ ______, 2003" and installed it on the inside of the door under the sink. First time I've done that, but these were (are) really special people and I wanted to do a little something.
Anyways Neil, that's a great way to commemorate your first xmas as husband and wife. Man, how the time flys. Good luck to you both.

How much you think I can get for it?
no seriously...
;)
Somehow I don't think any sucker would pay enough to cover the costs lol
one other thing I wasn't happy with, the doors, to big of a gap between, once the hinges were morticed and screwed in and I noticed, didn't seem worth screwing with again...
sometimes it's better to just be finished with it...

We're just giving advice for when you build one for your daughter.

very nice - only thing you need to worry about is the size - way too small -
but you can make another next year -
the presents my family have appreciated the most are the ones I've made - you did well -
"there's enough for everyone"
small for a reason ;)
sorry hunny, would have loved to give you another ring, but the box is already full...
Well, how did it work out? Are you a hero? Did you add any jewelry to the box?
I bought my wife a jewelry box for Christmas. Well, sort of. The bracelet came in a nice wodden box. Got it from James Avery jewelers. She was thrilled.
Did you see the thread form the archy in Kansas City looking for a builder? Wonder if you can offer him any advice.

I missed the thread about the Archy in KC, got a link?
The jewelry box went well, but I didn't put anything new in it. She was thrilled with it.

yer such a romantic!
That just makes me all teary....you are a good man. Did she LOVE it? It's beautiful. PamilynThe purpose of Art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls
Nice work, remember to sign it and date it, it will truely make someone in a couple 100 years appreciate as much as your new bride. Can't wait to see that new bassonet and crib, figure you will be posting next year.

How about I post a picture of the bed I still haven't finished to giver her as a wedding gift when I get that done?.... and we leave the bassenet/crib for a few years down the road ;)
Fair enough, quess you will need the bed to make the babies lol.
Hey I with you, enjoy your life together before kids, did it the same way didn't have my first till I was 42. Now I have 6 kids and one due in Feb. I figured out how its happening now, probably should have never made the bed.
Nice work. I like it.
I would take off the brass feet, except that they are the only thing that indicates which side goes down. They look a little too small.
Now, if you want to really surprise her, put a pair of diamond earings in the drawer.

You're not the first to suggest, consider it dully noted and filed away :)
Nice work! Looks like there is a lot of room in there for chains. Do you all do the whips thing too?

You may have seriously messed up - Now she's gonna expect you to buy her jewelry to fill it up.
(-:
.
Seriously - I wouldn't sweat things like the brass feet or the different heights of the post thingies. That fact that you got it done is MUCH more important than how perfect it is.
Or to look at it another way - I've always said the only treehouse that is built wrong is the one that you never get around to building while your kids are still at home. You got around to doing this, and hopefully she'll appreciate it.
After you give her the thing, try this line on her:
You're a jewel. When's the last time you had a good buffing?
To be perfectly honest I was kinda hoping/counting on a little extra speacial gift from her ;)
Honestly? it is great ! I think a better choice of hinges would make it PERFECT tho'. Soss hinges, or knife hinges really make a difference..but I am real picky about that stuff since I realize how much stuff I have made that should have had better hardware.
She'll love it I am certain.
To be honest I wasn't to happy with the hinges myself, I looked into SOSS hinges and I couldn't get the size I needed locally, and when I talked to the guys at woodcraft they were'nt convinced they would work for what ever reason.
I didn't think to use knife hinges, and I looked at some Nice hinges from Brusso however at 22 bucks a set I didn't think I needed 45 bucks in the hinges.
What I'm most happy with is the finish, which doesn't show as well in the pictures, but it's seriously smooth and just the right sheen for my taste.
yer such a softie!
Looks good, hoss. She'll love it. Nothings better than something you had to put your time and heart into. Beats heck out of something off the shelf at Wally world.
