I’m building a large shop and never have been fond of pole barns. I believe I can frame one on a monolithic slap and have a better building. With pole barns I always wind brace the eave walls every 8′ along the eave walls. From the top cord of the rafters across the bottom cord down to the 6″x6″ wall posts. Staying well above head height. Can someone tell me if I frame the building 2″x6″x16′ high, can I get away without these braces. I could go less in height at 14′ if I have to. The shop will be 40’x 64′ finished off,insulated, and heated. My supplier says with just the corner braces, I would not need them but believe I will end up putting them in. At least every 8′ but maybe not down on the wall so far. (There will be no cross walls in the building.)

Morning Dean,
An exterior wall 64'0" long and 16"0" high and your question is can you get away from installing any type of cross or wind bracing.
NO.
Check your local code requirements in your jurisdiction before you plan out this project. I asume that this will be a working shop and storage. By the size, you probably won't be alone working in it and again I assume you will want to have insurance on this building and nothing gives the insurance an easy out like major code violations.
It doesn't cost a nickel to check it out first and I know it isn't your intent to build something that would be unsafe, so please go back to square 1.
*Dean - Will this still be a pole barn, with poles embedded? The size of the poles, species, depth of embeddment, and soil all have an effect on this. I'm assuming your slab edge will be attached to the inside of the poles. JLC did an article on this a while back. Looked slick.

What was the article -- I would like to see it, can you be more specific.
If the poles are not embedded, the bracing requirements increase.

Dean, if you are going to sheath the walls, the sheathing will be an adequte substitute for the windbraces, in most cases.

Are you putting up a stud wall, or is it indeed a pole barn?If it is a stud wall what is the spacing for the wall? If it is a pole barn(essentially a post and beam structure) what are the sizes and spans?A little more info. would help focus the discussion.
