I am installing vinyl windows in a new addition to a detached garage. In the past I have trimmed windows and then put in a drip cap. For this installation I am not going to be using trim as it is a utilitarian building and will run the hardiplank up to the window. My question is this, is a drip cap over the windows needed or recommended? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Bill

Yo Bill
Easy answer would be-what do the directions say so you don't void the warranty?
but
Is there an all inclusive formed into the window-nailing flange?
Thanks for writing, there is no mention of a drip cap in installation information from the manufacturer and yes there is an all inclusive.
Bill,
do they show details on how they want you to use the flexible flashing and I'm sorry-may have missed it-are you using house wrap or felt paper or other?
I am using housewrap with the flexible flashing installed per manufacturer's directions. Basically covering the nailing flanges on the sides and top with the housewrap covering.

I've got to get back outside and climb a ladder........
but
can you link us up to the install instructions so we can see what they advise?
thanks.
The document is about 500 mb in size so instead of attaching it here is what it says about final installation.
1. R elease the building wrap
from above the header
(previously taped up)
and overlap the header
flashing. Seal the ends with
self-adhesive flashing or
building wrap tape.
2. A djust window for best
operation.
3. Seal the top corners of the
window with a 1/4" bead
of sealant. Tool into a fillet
shape.
4. Create a continuous air seal on the interior by integrating the rough
opening and the window frame with low expansion polyurethane
foam or backer rod and sealant. If installing into wood framing with
a drain mat, apply sealant to the foam wedge on the back of the
drain mat, integrating the back of the drain mat with the window
frame.
5. Ensure weep holes/channels are clear of debris for proper water
drainage. Do not seal weep holes/channels.
Install exterior wall surface within 30 days of window installation.
• Maintain gap of 1/4"- 3/8" between window frame and final exterior
wall surface. No expansion/contraction joint is needed for integral
J-channel windows installed into a structure with aluminum or vinyl
siding.
• Protect recently installed units from damage from plaster, paint, etc.
by covering the unit with plastic.

Yes, head flashing over flange then building wrap released and layed over head flashing-tape the two slits on the corners.
I'll see if I can find a detail-FHB mag had a recent detail in print or in FHB.com.
Really, the head flashing will do nothing extra but it shouldn't harm anything either. Remember, you've made a good seal on the sides, and want any water that made it behind the building wrap up above the window to be able to drain out.
