Hi All
I have helped build a few rough sawn B and B houses and have never been satisfied with the way the Contractor flashed the windows. He had us simply side over the nailing fins of windows then he would trim and cauk with RS wood. I have been back inside some of these houses and the windows all leak.
The building I am building right now is a wood shop, we will either be nailing straight to studs or through tar paper, we have not picked out the windows yet.

hold the outside of your window frame at the plane of the boards (the weather surface of the boards) -
stand a board up either side of the window and secure -
secure an 'L' flashing above the window -
fill in the siding space above the window with boards - adjust the width of the boards to come out even - cut a 45* drip edge on the tail of these boards and hold this edge up off the 'L' flashing -
secure the battens - the batten bridges the window frame to the siding board - when battening above the window, use that same 45* drip edge on the batten and hold that edge up off the flashing -
the flashing below the window is straightforward -
notice there is no horizontal trim element above the window to trap moisture, and any moisture that gets behind the B&B is channeled over the flashing -

this sounds like a good fix for a brickmold fastened window. I am unclear on how to seal or flash the sides and bottom, especially with a nailing fin style window instilation.

well, how do you prepare the wall for the siding - blocking? sheathing? nailers?
I don't think I've ever used a flange nailed window in a B&B situation -
but we should be able to figure it out -
we'll think like water...
if you are not following it, Mike Smith's thread in the photo gallery is just at the window sealing stage - check it out - 67972.665
