I’m in the process of popping the casings off most of our double hung windows to retrieve downed weights and replace the sash cords with chains. Is there any thing else I should, or could, be doing in that space before I put it back together? I’m thinking along the ideas of insulating or improving the ease of operation. I just don’t want to hear about some clever idea in a couple of weeks. Thanks for any input.

sam.... why do you have to remove the casings ?
all the sash weight windows i have ever seen have a maintenance hole (in the jamb) that is held in place with a screw so you can change the sash cord..
b IF
you do remove the casings you can inspect and judiciously use a minimal expanding foam to seal gaps and cracks that let the wind whistle thru...you have to wait until all of the foam is cured and remove any excess that interferes with the sash weight travel
usually... if people get serious about energy loss... they get rid of the sash weights, foam the cavity.. and install friction jambs to control the sash...
*Sam- Most sash weights are accessed through the weight door in the jamb. Never seen them repaired by taking off the casing. Sorry no tips on improving except to get the stops tight, keeps the drafts to a min.
*I really don't think I have a door unless its behind the upper sash, which I'm not removing because they have been well caulked and painted in for many moons. I, too, expected the door. Where is the access door in the jamb usually?Another question. Should the weight of the weights equal, exceed, or be less than the sash? Sounds stupid, but...
*sam.... the ones i remember are always in the jamb in the lower sash.. you back out the screw, open the little door... and fish out the sash weight...the doors are there... they may have been painted so you can't see them....if i remember... there is one in front of the parting bead.. and one behind the parting bead...(upper & lower ).... but it's been a while you shouldn't have to worry about what weight to use.. they're in there.. all you have to do is go fish.....the only way they disappear is if the sill rots out and they drop thru to the the basement...or .. if someone borrows one and doesn't put it back... highly unlikely
*Sam -- There are the good kind of double hungs with the weight door, and the cheap kind like you and I have where there's no door. I'm going to pull mine out and put in casements.-- J.S.
