Window replacement w reframing – seismic strapping required?
We’re replacing three windows on this 1960 single story ranch in California. The windows are a few inches larger or smaller than the existing windows so reframing is involved. The windows are NOT in a shear wall. Is any seismic strapping required (ie tieing the top plate, header, king stud, etc)? Or is it a good idea?

If the windows aren’t in a shear wall, seismic strapping isn’t typically required by code. However, adding straps to tie the top plate, header, and king stud can improve stability and is a good idea for extra seismic reinforcement, especially in earthquake-prone areas like California.
