Well. My windows came in and they are exact to the rough opening size. 36”.
Although the manufacturer doesn’t say anything in their install sheet regarding spacing on the sides of the window, everything I’m seeing says I need at least 1/4 to 1” spacing.
Can I plane my Jack studs 1/8 – 1/4 on each side without breaking California code?
Also, was going to create a 5 degree sill plate for run.
Thank everyone. I just am trying not to reframe the windows as I already my Kerdi up in both bathrooms; one standing and one with a tub. To reframe the openings would take some doing…

Did you not build to the rough openings listed by the manufacturer?
Is this an addition, new construction or a remodel?
This is a remodel. The frame was existing. Home Depot submitted the window measurements as “operating” and not as rough opening. That’s on me for not researching more and asking the right questions.
The windows fit, they are just tight. I was going to liquid flash the opening but that’s going to make the space even tighter. I may bring the inspector out Monday to see what they want. Worst case I guess we’d have to reorder the windows.
I have the 1/4” spacing on the top and bottom but not on the sides. Barring any moisture intrusion I think the window will be fine.
Could you cut the fasteners on those studs, ram a wider 2x4 across, install new fasteners to hold it?
I don’t know what you have. for siding
you can eliminate one or both trimmers with hardware.
