I am about to finish my windows, which have been up for 3 years.
They are Pozzi double pane, clear pine.
Since they have been up for 3 years the pine has darkened to a deeper color– just the shade color that we want.
I plan to not stain at all and instead apply 2 or 3 coats of Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane Clear Semi gloss
Any problem not staining??
Also– I am a bit concerned finding trim to match. I want colonial casing, picture frame style, for the windows. Pine trim off the shelf is lighter than my weathered color. Is another similar wood a typically bit darker?
Thanks very much,
Rick

It's been my past experience that polyurethane doesn't work well on unsealed wood. I would recommend a clear sealer first.

There won't be any problem not staining the trim. You might even have difficulty getting an even stain job, since the wood has probably darkened inconsistently, depending on it's exposure to light. You should be able to stain new wood to match the darkened wood fairly closely, though the match will not be perfect. It'll be easier to stain the new trim before installing. Bear in mind that stained wood looks different--typicaly a little darker--after a clear top coat has been applied, so don't rely only on the stain to gauge the finished look when matching the new to the existing.

*Hello. I need some advice about technique to apply inside window trim around some large windows. My problem is that I want to use a wide trim, about 4 inches wide, however I have a corner where the inside allowance for trim would be 2 inches on either side of the window. Does anyone have any suggestions about how to handle this, ie no trim, rip some, etcThanks,Kevin

I'd rip trim down. It usually looks fine. Most times even if it looks funny to you most people would never notice. Remodeling seems to be a series of compromises anyway. For best result, scribe the piece to the wall.
