OK, I finally made room in the office for a new machine and assembled the furniture for it, unpacked everything and plugged her in
Mr Window says, “Hello, Nice to meet you, BTW, is this a genuine copy of Microsift Windows XP? We want to be sure that you aren’t some kind of crook”
Seems like a poor way to start a relationship to me, by accusing your new customer of being a thief.
Anyway, they want me to plug in a 25 character number from my authentication banner stuck to the back of the PC.
Mine only has 14 charachters
and it won’t even accept those. it will display about every third digit.
The small local shop I bought it from is closed for the weekend. They have an excellent reputation here BTW.
The warrantee diagnostic service left me on hold for an hour and killed the comnection.
Anybody have a clue which way to turn? I tried the MS website.

piffin...
i have installed/reinstalled windows xp home edition several times on my computer due to disk drive failure, reformating, etc.. the serial number was only good once, and the second time i installed it wouldn't take the original number.. i had to call MS for a new serial number for XP. Im not sure if this is the same with Pro, and im not even sure this is the same for the Home edition, since mine is a free handout from a MS employee.
so you might be able to call MS and they will give you another serial number..
good luck..

piffen... my XP Pro disk is glued to a book... there is a notice on the book that says
"The Certificate of Authenticity label has been removed by your PC manufacturer and should be attached to your PC"
maybe your PC builder did the same thing..
on my other machine , the label is right on a label attached to the book..Mike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
Check yur email....Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming.... WOW!!! What a Ride!
They stuck my label inside my machine's front door.
I see what you mean. There is a 14 digit numeric code under the bar code.
There's another above it. 25 characters - a mix of letters and numbers.
Try that one.
i dont have the number written down, and couldn't find it on the web... closest i found was this page
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/evaluation/overviews/activation.asp
and it mentions a number, but doesn't give you a number.. the number i received poped up on the screen during the install, so it wasn't a number in the owners manual..
good luck..
yes. I had to do that to, or hook to internet and it will do automatic.

I just checked my XP Pro folder:
There is a removable (not easy) PRODUCT KEY sticker with 5 sets of charachters of 5 numbers/letters each.
I looked for a telephone number for you, but I can't see one for some reason.
Can't you get on the MS website via one of the other machines?

Thanks everyone. i think it was stonefever's suggestion that is going to prove most helpfull.
it was the mention about looking under the door.
See, there is a sticker with the book like Mike Smith has and it says, "this cert of auth should be placed on the back of the machine by the manufacturer." So I peeled it off the book and stuck it on back of the machine. That is the one that has 14 charachters.
Anyway, I got to looking all over the rest of the box and found the other half of the sticker with 25 characters. Boy is it hard to read those small digits on the holographic display!
The wife just called me for dinner, but I'm betting the collection of advice here has me off and running. See ya later.
