Upgraded my Verizon/Westell DSL modem to one with wireless built in….got to wondering…why can’t I go “backwards”….i.e. use the wireless function in the modem as a router between my desktop & laptop…anyone know?

Not sure you're looking at it the right way. The Modem doesn't really need to act as a router. at least I don't think it does. Its more a matter of how the netwrok settings on the desktop and laptop are configured whether you can go back and forth between the two. If you set them up as a home network you should be able to see the other machine on that network using the wireless system. Remember though if you open them so you can share information between the two to do it with a login otherwise anyone in the area would have access to your machine.
the laptop is a Powerbook with wireless built in....the desktop is a clone, no wireless card installed....it would be easy & not too expensive to install a wireless card in the desktop, but being thrifty I thought maybe one could hack the modem.....
You can't because the modem wont "send" wireless, only recieve. A router is needed to trransmit.

of course the modem sends wireless...it's sendoing it to this as I write....I understand it isn't a router, but it seems like that's a software distinction & there might be a hack to use it as a router....
I don't think so. The router is a hub, the modem is not.
"Hacking it" seems like a lot of work for little gain.

If it was a viable alternative, it would be done

The one used by SBC is also a router. It is a Homewire or something like that.Try http://www.dslreports.comThey have a Verizon and a Westfel forum.
wireless function in the modem as a router between my desktop & laptop....
I would say DO NOT USE wireless for networking between computers.. To easy for others to access your files..
I see folks sitting outside a house in a car during the day and night with a laptop..
Moving around the neighborhood.. I get the car tag number and report it to the police.. Not sure what they are doing.. Police seem to get upset at me but I go and report it ANYWAY!I get the badge number of the police officer I reported it to..
Just me though...
Too" easy for others to access your files"......only because many of the vendors set the box default configuration to no security, & people are too lazy to figure out how to set up the security features...
I was concerned too, but when I walked around my house with the wireless on in the laptop & realized how limited the range was, my anxiety level went way down....
for someone to piggy-back on my connection they would need some seriously modified high gain antenna setup....
dude, you need to have a beer and relax....

Tim,
My neighbor two doors down is in network security. After she set up her home network ( 4 machines) she made some rig out of a pringles can, some wire and a little tin foil.
We sat around and watched what the neighborhood was doing on it's computers from sometimes as far away as five houses.
Hey, what's Butz building across from the Parkland School district building?
which one ?
i think they have about 40 buildings.

Across from the Administration building. The one up against the west bound lanes of 22 between Cedar Crest and 309.
http://www.tampabays10.com/news/news.aspx?storyid=13482St. Petersburg - A veterinarian using a wireless computer at his home on 26th Avenue North Wednesday night called St. Petersburg police. He realized a man using a laptop computer in a car parked in front of his home, had tapped into his internet service.ST. PETERSBURG POLICE SPOKESMAN GEORGE KAJTSA:
"While this person was accessing his computer, little icons appeared on his computer screen, or his monitor and this puzzled him because he did not access any of those areas."Police say they arrested 40-year-old Benjamin L. Smith III while he was still on-line in front of the veterinarian’s home. Smith is charged with offense against computer use, a felony.GEORGE KAJTSA:
"So what the computer did is basically searched the area to see if there was a signal, found it, and utilized it."
I have to admit, I have never heard of a modem and wireless router all in one box. But that sounds like what you've got. What make and model is it ?
Are you plugging a network cable from the back of your desktop into the box ? Is there more than one location to plug in network cables ? Do you have a wireless card built into your laptop (or a separate card) ?
If you are currently using your laptop wirelessly with this "box", then you are already going "forward" and "backward". (Not really the right terms here) The data transfer goes both ways au natural. What you need to do is set up a home network which involves your computers' software, not making adjustments to your router's (the box) setups. It is relatively simple to do with Windows XP.
As was mentioned before, security can be an issue with wireless if you don't set up your router properly. You should set it up to recognize only the MAC addresses of the computers that you want to have access. Then you need to set the encryption settings for either WEP or WPA so that the data transferred back and forth is encrypted and not easily viewed by the guy out in the car with the laptop. All of these settings involve making adjustments to software settings on your router. Your router's instructions should show how to do this.
A modem (a portmanteau word constructed from modulator and demodulator) is a device that modulates an analog carrier signal (sound), to encode digital information, and that also demodulates such a carrier signal to decode the transmitted information. The goal is to produce a signal that can be transmitted easily and decoded to reproduce the original digital data. Primarily used to communicate via telephone lines, modems can be used over any means of transmitting analog signals, from driven diodes to radio.
A router is a computer networking device that forwards data packets toward their destinations through a process known as routing. Routers are also now being implemented as Internet gateways, primarily for small networks like those used in homes and small offices. This application is mainly where the Internet connection is an always-on broadband connection like cable modem or DSL. These are not "routers" in the true sense, but the terminology has been confused with network address translation.
As shown above, the modem is a two way translator of data on a data highway. Once the data is translated, the router is used for traffic control on the highway. By having a wireless router, you now create a new highway in the air as opposed to the one hard wired with network cables.
realized how limited the range was
maybe at your house, but my neighbor's network was left open since he got it, and I can surf the net anytime I am in my dining room which is the closest spot to his router.

SBC uses the 2 Wire Home Portal as an option.http://www.2wire.com/?p=8"HomePortal is a one-box solution, featuring a high performance ADSL modem, super-fast router, professional-grade firewall, and flexible home networking options including a HyperG wireless access point*."Don't know if the Westfall has all of that or not, but it is available in the market.
pretty cool....
i am in cord heaven with my D-Link separates
cable modem
vpn router

D***m, that must be one of those high gain antennas I wasn't worried about....'scuse me while I go set up the WEP on my wireless modem....yikes!
If you like that, you might find this amusing...saw a article a while back..couple of hackers took a high gain antenna connected to a Bluetooth enabled device, walked to the end of a pier in SF, & hijacked a cellphone in Japan....
I was teasing my Project manager a while back, he walks around with his nose in a Blackberry...which is Bluetooth enabled, with, as near as I can find out, no way to turn off the Bluetooth functionality.....
exactly why I posted this....we don't need no stinkin wires....
FYI...Wierless is doomed. FCC controls all hertz and are NOT going to release any new frequencies.
Stay wired, trust them.

Wanna bet?
Useless till the FCC unleashes the Homeland act...My Wife's ex is CIA...it is all stalled in that frequency below 100 Mghz.

Why look here?
it's mostly...at least for the home network user...low power stuff....so you don't need lots of spectrum...until you have the chance to work anywhere in your house without wires, you don't know what you're missing....
HAha..trust me..I KNOW what I am missing, I moved in here last yr. and am back to dial up, after having wireless BB
I could take my laptop any where in about a 3 block radius and be online..way cool.
Such is life..my cell phone don't even work where I reside now.
