Milwaukee 3/8 hole shooter with Jacobs keeyless chuck
When I need a precise hole, use a long bit or hole saw, it is readily apparent that something is out of wack. The long bits wobble noticably and hole saws are a PITA. Either the chuck or the main shaft is bent. Is there any way to find out which it might be other than forking out the cash for a new chuck and trying it.

Take the chuck off, mount the drill in a vise and clamp a pencil or somethng just touching the shaft. Run the drill slow and see if it pushes the pencil or shows a gap. Either means the shaft is toast. No change, it prolly is the chuck, try another.

my bet is on the chuck. The keyless chucks you get already attached are not there becasue they had the highest quality, but more of a balance between cost & quality with cost be the primary factor.
Agreed. Then agin, I have bent my share of shafts in both the shop and site. Sometimes a controlled crash is just that..LOLSpheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Thanks for the responsees. It seems so wasteful to toss the drill if the new chuck would solve the problems. I soppose I'll have to risk being pissed off if if the new chuck doesn't straighten things out.
