I have a pile of applewood, rough cut into 10 x 2 planks, that’s been drying for 16 months. Just noticed some bug activity, but can’t determine what type. Is there any other method besides heating the stack to 140 degrees to destroy them?

To prevent moisture buildup and improve performance, install a continuous air barrier—such as drywall or specialized membranes—under tongue-and-groove boards or other interior wall paneling.

fumigation is effective in most cases, but is a bigger PITA than heating...
Apple 10 x 2! Wow, nice planks.
By bug activity you mean they are affecting the wood?

There's 1 10" x 2" by 41/2', the rest are 6 or 7 inches by 3 or 4 feet. Salvaged from my neighbor's botched tree removal.
Try some Borate powder. Non toxic to us.
I don't know how many kinds of bug this works on however.
