We are leaving the carpet to allow movment and asorb shock. We plan on using 2×4’s flat with 3/4 tongue and groove plywood attached with screws. Because this is in a rented space we must be able to dissasemble in the future.
Any ideas on construction or materials appreciated. What type of finish, must look good and not be slippery.

I thought dance floors were supposed to be slippery?
If this floor needs to be removed at a later date bolt your 2x4 s to the slab with some kind of concrete bolt. ( "Ramset" is a brand name here, don't know about there ). These can be countersunk to allow the ply floor to go over the top.
*What sort of dance floor are you going for? A real dance studio usually has a basket weave system - 1X4's on the flat - 5 layers - always off set - than maple strip flooring with tung oil finish. They are fantatsic. These are available in modular (portable) systems. There are portable sections that are much simpler - uses foam squares and a unique t&g like system. Le Air is name of manufacture.I believe you could build up a simple system with pads and 1X4's, screw down t&g plywood, and cover with a vinyl dance floor - taped down like on a stage. Easily disasembled and relocated.
*Hi Peter,What kind of dancing? We do something similar in the dance venue at the Lake Eden Arts Festival http://www.theleaf.comOne thing we do is leave a channel for running a box under the floor for the snake.Remember when assembling to leave a rope in the channel to pull the box!Good health, Weogo
