I’ve purchased some flooring in Canada that was shipped there from Texas. I bought it because it is an exact match for some damaged flooring I have. Trying to find out if I can transport it personally across the border. I understand there will be duty to pay but do I need an importer for something like this. A transport company quoted $4K to ship it.

You should contact your Canadian and /or US customs office.
Many yrs ago I wanted to purchase Warm-n-Dry foundation insulation, made at the time in Canada.
I spent considerable time in Cn.Customs as they looked at every form of insulation they could find to figure out how much duty I needed to pay.
Me in an overloaded pickup among all the semi’s was quite the sight.
You can transport the flooring personally across the border for personal use, but you'll need to declare it at customs and pay applicable duties. While you may not need a formal importer, ensure you have necessary documentation and comply with customs regulations to avoid complications. Considering the high shipping cost, personal transport might be a cost-effective option.
