you do not say how wide your plank flooring is or what material it is made of. generally speaking, any flooring over 7-8″ width, I face nail or screw and plug. Using a minimum of 2″ fastener, you will be able to fasten into the car decking (which I am assuming is wood, never heard of it before).
if you plan to edge nail, I would not reccommend fastening into the underlayment alone; it will not hold the nails

The car decking is 2 X 6 tongue and groove subfloor. i plan on putting down three quarter by three and a half t & g prefinished oak or cherry.
I would definitely reccommend loosing or covering the particle board before installing the flooring.walk good
Particle board does not like water. If there is any chance that someone will spill some water, or you have a pet that likes to relieve itself in one spot and that might soak through, or you have someone who like to wet mop with a lot of water so that the water (even in an adjacent room that might spill over), I suggest that you seal the particle board well or, as the previous post suggests, lose it...
If it is really particleboard, forget fastening into it. Consider a gluedown using Bostiks Best urethane flooring adhesive.
If it is OSB (oriented strand board), then you are talking something different. 2" flooring cleats or 2" flooring staples should do you just fine.
OSB will not hold flooring nails either. cdx or board sheathingwalk good
the car decking you have is nice.. if it really is particle board it will swell if it gets wet and leave the floor lumpy plus particle boards don't hold nails worth diddly.. Squwweek!
