I am building a house for a customer who insists on both heated floors and wood flooring. I have always been leary of the expansion and contraction of the wood flooring in combination with the cycling floor heat. The method of attachment such as a floating plywood layer over the slab seems to just be adding insulation between the heat source and the living area, as well as extra expence. Has anyone found a good solution?

I've got that in my house (wife won on the choice of flooring). Used two layers of 1/2" CDX to toenail the 3.75" x 3/4" T&G solid, local birch into. It does lag a bit due the insulative flooring over the RFH. Smarter controls (outdoor reset, PID controller, etc) help a lot to avoid much of the lag and reduce the high and low overshoots.
Pergo (et al) with the thin padding for RFH is a lot less insulative and will hold much tighter to the thermostat's set point. Looks like Pergo though.
If you check with JLC (www.jlconline.com) and then Research, I think that they have a couple of Q&A's that discuss this and an article or two on it. You will have to pay for the article unless you have the back issues.
Most Laminated floors Work well with Radiant heated sub floors. If Plank flooring is used be sure to keep the widths down. You can order a great flooring Reference for Radiant floors through The Radiant Panel Association.

Then click on flooring guide. Hope that helps….
As another option, the bamboo I've used as a gluedown to the slab has had zero measurable expansion/contraction. I'm completely satisfied with its performance, though playing with the urethane adhesive is not one of life's more pleasant tasks.
