There's a lot of discussion on this in the archives. If you look at it, you'll find that I'm not a big fan of Pergo, as far as durability goes, but a very debatable point. My opinion, you want wood, use WOOD. Especially in a traffic area. But the other laminated products are easier to install and maintain. Be researchful, take your car keys to some samples of various flooring. You'll be surprised.

Hi Tim Parkan.
I dont know much about Pergo floors other than that they sound hollow once installed.
I also prefer the real wood floor achieved through use of real wood.
The best, I think, is quarter-sawn white oak. But you can mill up something yourself out of tulipwood, lacewood, bubinga, purpleheart, satinwood, etc.
If you do use any of these exotics, please post pictures. I think there might be others interested in seeing that.
Hope this helps.
*No one is going to convince me that laminate flooring is durable for the next 10 years. A laminate flooring in a local hardware retailer's showroom floor is about 1 year old and showing wear already. To be sure it would show wear if it was wood also, but it would have a lot of sandings left in it too. Glazed ceramic in kitchens, baths, and laundryrooms, and hardwood elsewhere is my choice. We installed prefinished hardwood veneer flooring in The Barber Shop this winter. Ronnie claims I'm the first one to spill beer on it too. I'm keeping my eye on it to see how it holds up. Theoretically it has at least one sanding in it. One of these days I'll tell you guys about the barber shop.Joe
*Tim,I love real wood and you will not beat it for durability. But I also believe pergo is a good product. I prefer it over the engineered products. Either one you use you will have to pay for the top of the line to get a product that will last. Especially using it in an entrance. The hollow sound of pergo is from the fact it is floating. It does feel good to walk on. You can glue it down if it is undesireable. I have real wood and pergo in my house both are preforming admirably. Good luck.Rick Tuk

Laminate flooring is our specialty. I personally like the look of hardwood floors, but have found no comparison to laminate flooring, when it comes to durability, maintenance, and appearance. We carry 11 of the top manufacturers, and I've personally installed over 1,000
floors. Laminate flooring is the most practical and overall,
the best floorcovering to fit every situation in a home or business. The only downfall I can tell you is that the existing sub-floor must be level and low in moisture content.
