I would like to build a small wood framed awning over my door and am looking for some ideas. What I have in mind is an awning about 4 feet wide and projecting out about 3′, with a gable or shed type roof. Anyone know where I can view photos or drawings of some examples? I’ve been trolling the neighborhood for ideas but folks around here don’t seem to use em. I’m tired of fumbling with the lock while getting dripped on!

They do sell an aluminum awning kit at the big box which pretty much just needs to be assembled.
If you want to build your own "porch roof", you'll need to give a lot of consideration to support, such as columns.
One day, I'd like to do something similar on my own home. It will be tied into the main roof and use joists that span from the exterior wall to columns.
Mine will look similar to this, but since I have a ranch, the gable will die into the main roof.

If Hudson Valley Contractor comes on, he built several for his house in S california. You can search the photo archives and probably find them.
