We are looking for a qualified roofer to install a wood roof for us in Southern RI. The roof in question has about 24 square worth of shingles. There is a main roof about 16 feet x 46 feet, with two smaller roofs about 12 feet x 12 feet each, and a back addition roof about 9 feet x 18 feet.
If anybody out there is interested please let me know by either posting here or emailing at [email protected]
Thanks alot

What exactly is a "wood roof" ? Are they talking about cedar shakes? If so, then why not use the correct terminology?
I saw this post and thought they wanted a framing carpenter.
If you were a carpenter and not a "mark"
youd not be singled out by the sharks that wood sell you a soulda wolda coulda roof..

Wow, I just re-read my post. What a nasty, unfriendly post! I need a quick slap upside the head for being so stiff and wooden.
I think I shouldn't spend any time on these forums right after I've had a particularly unpleasant day. It's not very fair to unleash my frustrations on basically innocent bystanders who are just looking for some online help.

Don't feel bad.... I think we've all done it at least once.
I've scrolled through threads and muttered to myself, "man, what a dick head".
Then I realized it was my post.
Whoops. The internet is the new emotional punching bag of the world. At least yer man enough to realize it and own it. Good on ya.
You ignorant son of b, you ruined my life. I fart in your general direction.

Now you've gone too far. Take it back or I'll tell.
PS. The red sox stink. :-)
The term might be foreign to carps but amoung the roofers I knew, wood roof was common terminology. Say wood roof, and the reply was "Shakes or shingles"?

Gonna show my age here..... stupid question time..... what is the difference between shakes and shingles? I hear the two used interchangeably all the time and always figured their was a real difference that got lost in the shuffle. I don't see many cedar roofs around here.
shakes are split or sawn one side, shingles are sawn both.

Got it.
Thanks dude.
Like S said, shakes are normally hand split.
Several variations on the theme, but normally, cedar shingles are 16" long, 3/8" thick at butts, sawn both sides, better ones resquared and sanded. Laid most often at 5" to the weather. Kaz exter is done all with shingles, white cedar 5" exposure. I personally hand-nailed nearly every one of them.Shakes are 24" long, hand split and resawn backs, 3/4" thick at butts ( 1" for heavies) rugged looking, laid with an interweave of tarpaper to make the roof stay dry ( 'cause wide gaps let wind driven rain in between them) and are normally laid at 10" to the weather. I can't find my shots of shakes, but bet you can google for " cedar shakes" plus roofI see far fewer of either here in New England for roofing than I did in the west. Another source for confusion here ( Not a stupid question but common misunderstanding here) is from Perfections, the thicker red cedar shingles. They are 18-20" and have 5/8" butts and are laid 6-8" to the weather. Being sawn and laid closely, they are really shingles, but the look is sometimes more of a rugged shake appearancce. Attach col-pilaster is done with perfections.

I wish you were 20 yrs younger and helped me with the oak handsplits in Perryville...18" and not tapered. Not sawn. and 6" to the weather.
