*Don't worry as much about building codes for wood burning stoves as Insurance codes for these. Check with your Insurance carrier BEFORE you install one. They can tell you all you need to know about what type of stove they will allow, if any. Mine met building code, but insurance company refused coverage until I removed it. Could not find a single company to cover my home until I DID remove it.Just a thought...James DuHamel

*James, interesting. Did they indicate what it was about your installatiojn they didn't like? What They would accept?

*Bob,They didn't allow free standing wood burning stoves at all. Installed fireplaces would have been acceptable, at a higher premium though.I had a Ben Franklin free standing wood burnng stove. It was installed with triple wall pipe, per code. Insurance companies just refused to insure because it was there. I had to remove it before I could get coverage. Right now, becasue of the mold issues, my mom is having a terrible time trying to find insurance. She has a nice house, in great shape, but the mold issue has caused a lot of companies here to refuse new policies until the Texas Insurance Comissioner rules on their request to drop mold coverage altogether. It's a mess. She finally found a company, maybe. They are putting her through the third degree before they will offer coverage. Company is called Germania.James DuHamel

*Here in New Mexico, as well as requiring triple wall pipe through the ceiling and roof, some kind of firebrick or fireproof surround on the walls and under the stove to insulate are suggested. Also there must be a certain distance between the stove and the walls. Not a bad idea, as the heat given off from a really hot fire can scorch anything too close to it. Check with stove suppliers, they may have free information on specs for woodstove use.

*James, Thanks for the info.I don't know how dangerous mold is, but mold-phobia in the hands of the insurance co's, lawyers and investigative reporters is creating one of the great mental health crises of the 21st century. Some of the home inspector forum fights over mold testing make the Tavern look like macrame and iced tea parties!

*Johnnie, I had a free standing wood stove installed (Jotul). The manual states that the installation needs to be done according to NFPA 211 or CAN/CSA-B365. I bought a UL listed hearth pad to go beneath the stove. The website hearth.com is very informative and has links to other sites.
