I an looking for a way to latch a 36″ x 72′ wooden gate that can be opened from both sides. The gate sits between 2 4×4 posts, is an inswing, with self closing hindges. I found the National Hardware Thumb latch N-109-050 but it only works on gates up to 3″ thick. (plus the reviews state the thumb bar falls out if the gate closes to hard) My gate has the 2x4s on edge creating a 4 1/4″ thick gate with the 5/8′ fence board.
This is a gate for the entrance to our back yard going to our downstairs apartment in a single family residence neighborhood. It will be heavily used. So I’m looking for something that is user friendly, easily opened from both sides and looks modern. (the last request is from my wife) .
I thought this would be an easy find but is becoming difficult.

Why do you need a latch? If you want it to open from both sides and get lots of use, The self-closing hinges and a handle to pull might work.
Are there little kids or pets who need to be denied access?
If you want modern, you can consider an electric latch, and hook it up to the internet.
I've used exterior door locksets on high-end gates. I think Baldwin makes mortise locks that will handle that thickness.
