Hi,
I’m constructing a mahogany storm door 1 3/4″ thick, the insect screen will be on the outside of the tempered glass windows and the muntins are on the outside of the screen. I’d rather not have to store glass panels etc so I’d like to construct it so the top glass panel is fixed with in frame and the bottom panel can slide up and down, using some type of brass hardware to keep the window held up at the desired level. The glass panels will be mounted within a removable wooden frame so the whole thing can be removed when the screen requires replacing. The screen will be installed in a traditional way but it will be placed before the glass section goes in. That leaves about 1″ for the glass panel section to fit into. The door you see in the above link is pretty much the finalized design.
Has anyone done this type of construction before that could give me some pointers for possible methods to construct the sliding glass panel section.
Thanks for the input,
Wayne (from FWW forum)

All I can say is it is possible--I have a metal door that has sliding glass panels. Mine just have spring loaded catches that you pull in towards the inside of the window to disengage them from slots in the frame of the door and then you slide the window to one of about four locations and let the catches spring back into detents. May work even better in wood because my aluminum door is pretty flimsy and tends to rack.
Thanks Danno and Rez, I think I'll just have to design up a track out of wood once the windows arrive with some type of thin wooden frame for each pane. Your idea with the slots and spring loaded catch or pin would be ideal, I'll see what I can find at LV.
Thanks,Wayne
Hello Wayne,Maybe you could salvage the glass and track system from an old metal storm door. I wouldn't think it would be that hard to locate one of quality that needed replacing.A window and door contractor maybe?Good luck with what ever you figure out.Jeb
Looks like you are going to have to educate us!! Post some pictures.
I'm needing a door on an old house (1880's?) and really want a wood door. Almost settled for a new wooden one from Loew's to keep the cold out, but the opening is 7' high, and the new one wouldn't work without building it down. It didn't happen.
For what it's worth, I would have used a removeable window panel. It's a little less convenient twice a year, but somewhat easier to build.

I think I'd use pieces of aluminum channel for the slides.
