I am the unfortunate vicitim of a mating pair of woodpeckers. I have a 1970’s vintage rambler home with cedar 4×8 siding. The woodpeckers are very interested in making swiss cheese of these panels. To make a long story short, I have temporarily covered each of four holes about 1 1/2 in. in diameter with galvanized sheeting to get me through the winter months here in North Dakota. When the weather is more conducive to working outside, I wish to make this repair more eye appealing. Does anyone have any good ideas, exempting replacing the whole sheet, one of which happens to be cut out for my electrical service (ouch!!). By the way, there is additional damage beyond the large holes where they have drilled at random looking for bugs, I suspect. Thanks in advance for the help.

You're gonna hate this but the only way to really, really eliminate any current & future nest or food searching would be to change from wood to a different material siding.
Woodpeckers search dead wood. Your house is covered in dead wood & some parts sound more hollow than other parts.
My brother has run into the same thing (damage doesn't seem to be as extensive as yours tho) and he is slowly saving his pennies to change the siding (1970s vintage also).
1 out of 2 meeces dead. YAH! Dogs still useless. I'm really tempted to check out fingerprint powder for mice prints.
I have rebuilt the same woodpecker hole twice for one of my customers.
You can take two hole saws 1 1/2" and 1 5/8" for example and drill 2 jig boards so that you don't have to use the pilot bit drill the 1 1/2" hole in your siding using the jig board then drill a 1 5/8" plug in replacement stock using bigger jig.
I will then take a piece of 1" wide stock with hole and string threw hole, put glue on faces and pull it up tight to back of siding, let set .Then sand replacement piece till it fits tightly in siding put glue on back push in place wire brush gently till rough texture blends then paint or stain.
Then put up wind chimes directly in front of areas of attack, these seem to deter repeat attacks.

Try providing them with a more appealing place to nest and feed...
I prefer to drill them, rather than let them drill on my house.
My preferred drill is a Ruger .22 autoloader, MK II, stainless with a heavy long barrel, and outfitted with a Barska red dot holographic sight.
If this particular species migrate they would be protected and you would be breaking the law.Big bad black helicopters....do your thing.1 out of 2 meeces dead. YAH! Dogs still useless. I'm really tempted to check out fingerprint powder for mice prints.
I get MORE laughs out of this web site than anything else. The coffee is all over the computer screen.
Do you use a Glaxco Kydex holster by chance?
No. With my Ruger wearing the sight shown here, I am not sure what kind of holster, short of something custom, might work.

Just came back from Lake Placid, managed to get a few days of skiing in. Mirror Lake Inn was quite nice, we might return in February.
The house I bought had a pekkerwood hole in it. I noticed the previous owner had a couple of bare wires just inside that pekkerwoods hole. Noticed the pekkerwoods carcass right there too. Just shoot it. If you are concerned it is a protected species, just call the game office and ask.
The lumber yard I shop at has a regular customer who replaces the same board on their siding every couple of years.
The woodpecker(s?) go to the exact same spot year after year after year.

Can be ugly but functional and you might only have to put up with the twirling early morning rumble when yer trying to sleep for a while if yer lucky:o)
