Wool can cause some serious static problems in dry weather, but it lasts a long time and doesn't stain easy. I like it.
*My parents had several wool carpets. I was a kid at the time, but they seemed to like them, and they seemed to last forever. Twenty years at least.
*get new zealand wool.
*Persian rugs are wool and last hundreds of years, even with rather high traffic. In fact, used ones are sometimes more expensive than new ones.Surely it has much to do with the quality of the backing and with how it is tied / tufted, I mention this to support that the material is quite long lasting when well made.
*Wool will wear a bit faster than polyester or nylon, but it's still a valid choice. The key factors are, kerr has noted, construction method, density, backing, etc. Go to the Carpet & Rug Institute Web site for some more technical information. It's .
*Tony:remember this: WOOL SHEDS!We have hardwood all through our home and lots of persian (wool) rugs. The lint builds up faster than if we had a big hairy dog running around! They sure look nice though.Andy
*Wool carpets come in different 'twists'. a hard one is for a high traffic application like shops, softer for houses, so and so on.It is very hard wearing and has the great advantage of not giving off gases like synthetics. ( off gasing still occurs with foam underlay though ).As I live in New Zealand, I can vouch for our wool. very nice and of high quality.A top end clothing designer in Italy pays up to $100,000 i per baleso he can have the best.
*If you can get a wool carpet for the same price as synthetics, I would question the quality of it or if it is indeed wool. I would easily pay more for a good wool carpet. I know where there is a patterned one that cost 120/yd installed. Similar pattern in synthetic was only 55
