worm-drive saw question/ mag77 vs. bosch
Does anyone use the top handle on their worm drive saws? I have always used sidewinders, but want to try a Mag 77 or Bosch 1677, and wonder if they are one-handed saws like sidewinders. (I know that s-w’s have two handles, but in practice, they are used one-handed). The reason I’m asking is because the top handle on the Mag77 seems better angled than the Bosch, but I like the Bosch magnesium table better than the Mag’s aluminum one. Other than that, and the built in rafter hook on the Bosch, the saws seem exactly the same.

They are the same, the Bosch 77 is the new, improved version.

I've had worm drives for twenty years now............can't beat them!
The top handle is helpful when framing and cutting things over your head, rafter tails ect. I'm partial to Bosch tools, never used their worm drive though.
Good luck

My first attempt to post doesnt seem to have worked......ignore this if it eventually does. I own both a Mag77 and the new Bosch worm drives. I love them both. Although both are traditional style worms, the Bosch is available in a "top handle" design.

I recently replaced my trusty old Makita hypoid with the new Bosch. the thing I miss is the electric brake. Otherwise, a great saw like the 77.

Hmmm..... I'm in the habit of using mine two handed. The right hand handle is necessary to turn on the trigger switch, and the left puts my thumb in the right place to hold the blade guard back for starting the cut. The guard can be released when it's far enough along to rest on the wood, but any earlier and it puts an unevenness in the motion that shows up as a dig in the cut surface. Since it's already there, I keep my left on the handle. I think it's an extra measure of safety to have complete control of the machine. If the guard jams, I can hold it comfortably until it stops turning.
