As part of a whole house remodel we’re replacing the siding on a house built in 1979 which was sheathed in asphalt impregnated fiberboard (blackboard, celotex, etc.). Does anyone know of a self adhered WRB that will stick to it? If not, what would you suggest in that situation?

Self-adhered weather barriers stick best to OSB or plywood that has been treated with a primer recommended by the membrane manufacturer. They just don’t stick very well to most other substrates, including AIS. I would use a non-woven weather barrier, such as TYVEK, Barricade, etc. Follow the instructions regarding overlap, tape the joints and you shouldn’t have any issues.
