You don't have to sacrifice historical elements of a house in the name of energy efficiency.

Very nice. Far better than what I could do.
thx forlorn, like i said not fine cabinet building, maybe not even fine home building, but that s the work that i do and proud of what i do
it's a pretty simple concept, 5/8 melamine, veneered or edgetaped on exposed edges, simple joinery and a few simple but elegant finishing touches ie crown mold, a solid maple door (just biscuit joiner and a router) and careful finishing(time consuming but not difficult)
"it's a pretty simple concept,"
just because it's a simple/clean design ... doesn't mean it's not "fine homebuilding"!
Looks nice.

IMHO simple is good.A lot of really big problems I see seem to be caused by people not knowing when enough is enough and/or their fascination with complication.
thx for the comments guys, sure it wont make fhb pages, but it does go to show what can be done with simple construction techniques and materials
we build this kind of stuff everyday including kitchen cabinets, vanities, bars etc etc
materials in this project were white melamine particle board, 1/8 inch maple ply and edge tape, crown and some simple doors biscuit joined together
the drawer fronts were left over from a recent kitchen job
like i said before, DW loves it, next is a simple but elegant puter desk for our laptop
ideas anyone?
Hey, that looks like my cabinet work! Trust me dear, the doors are coming - LOL! Looks good, does the job.
thx for the comments guys, sure it wont make fhb pages,
Steve, for what it's worth, that's exactly the type of project I'd love to see in FHB. A nice step by step article from design to finishing with plenty of close up shots of the work in progress. I'll take a piece like that over some article on a foofy detail that about 1% of the population could afford to have in their home any day of the week.
Looks great. Wish it was in my living room.

You need to subscribe to Fine Woodworking. That's the kind of stuff they cover.

How is it finished?"With every mistake we must surely be learning"
finish is just varathane, satin, no stain
the cabinet is pretty simple really, just 4 white melamine boxes, veneered and edge taped on exposed surfaces, then just screwed together with a couple of fillers pieces here and there to break up the "5/8 particle board" look
the whole unit can be disassembled for moving very easily, crown molding and toekick are units in themselves
only one problem so far has been the drawer slides on those two drawers, they are filled with vhs tapes(about 120 each), boy are they heavy!!
That looks good. I made this out of 2x4 from 100 year old house, old glass from exterior windows, old cabinet hardware, and some old paneling. Total cost zero.
All dumpster diving. Other peoples trash.
Now, that is cool.---------------

Thanks.
