You were not loud enough.
The louder you get so everone in the store can hear you the better the reaction.
If you have the time stand in front of the shingle isle and tell all customers that they are cheeper at lowes.
After a while the manager will come to talk to you about your attitude.
Inform him that yes you do have an attitude and that the “bad” is subjective.
Be having fun messing with what little brains they have.

I dunno- at $1.50/bundle less x 3 bundles per sq x 6 sq, you spent probably the better part of an hour and a few gallons of gas in an attempt to save less than $30. Actually, it was only to save $3, come to think of it, because if you had gotten the 10% match at HD, you would have only saved $3 over buying them at Lowes when you first got there and found them to be cheaper.
Seems to me you've got to find something better to do with your "spare time"....lol.
Bob
Let's see, .5 miles between stores at 16 mpg at $2.59 a gal., I dunno, that's half a tank of gas.

Thats alright..Lowes is about 1/2 hour and 15 miles away..I pay 65 for a delivery of any amt. Normally, I get it, but the truck was filled w/ tear off shingles ( um, still is)
ABC in Lex is free del., and that is 30 miles and at least an hour, if I drive = my two hours, and 60 $ in gas in the F350...no brainer right?
Wrong.
I can call Lowes, pay the del. and be ahead, I think.
Actually, I just get all the stuff the EZist way...and can't fight a penny, just suck it up and pay.

I was in my local HD on Tuesday as the clerks were changing the price tags on the generators from $599 to $699. I live in Florida where Ernesto exited yesterday....I needed a tablesaw as I am doing a flooring job and they have the DeWalt and the Ridgid for big bucks. I asked the tool guy where the $99 tablesaws were and he acted like I was a was a fool and said to me "Why do you want to buy junk when you can get the good stuff right here?"
I got pissed and picked up the cordless Ryobi frigging CAULKING GUN and went off on the guy! I spend upwards of $500 a week there and as I walked by the GM I told him "No More, I'll try Lowe's until they piss me off too."
I'm certainly no fan of Agent Orange, but I actually had a good experience there today. I needed a couple of pieces of oak and found that they had a fresh supply so I got to pick out some good pieces.
When I walked around to the contractor checkout line it was empty. Yep, no long line of folks with overloaded carts waiting impatiently while some checker tried to wake up someone in plumbing 'cause some moron picked up a PVC Tee without a SKU sticker. (When did you last see that!!??)
The checkout gal and I joked about the lack of business and she asked me what I was making with the oak. When I told her it was for some bathroom vanities I'm building, she asked for my card. Apparently, she's remodeling a bathroom and says she wouldn't use a HD vanity if they gave it to her - lol.

Last week the HD clerk at 9 Mile rd. Pensacola, ticked me off so badly, that I made them unload 30 bags of compost I was buying for the garden.
When I got home I went to their customer comments internet site gave the store adddress, the clerks name and carefully explained what she had done to cause my anger. I got a precanned PC reply that
more or less said: "poor baby" and an offer to send me a $10 gift certificate if I would give them my address. I wrote back and said I didn't want a certificate, I wanted someone to counsel the lousy clerk. They then said I'd have to go to the store manager. WHY bother setting up a customer comments site, then?
Anyway, I went to Lowes and the same brand, same size was $1.00 a bag
cheaper. I've been back to Lowes several times since; I don't mind the extra drive if I can get better prices and pleasant clerks.Tigger
I think that that army of Cigar Store Indians (H-D clerks) could get a lot more chatting and skid moving done if the darn customers weren't always interupting them. Twenty registers ... one open ... fifteen people in line. How do you get 4x8 sheets of plywood through the self-checkout? I can't seem to fit them in the bag (the one that tears before you get out the door.) If you can find any help at all, it's never " their department", but they'll "get someone". Plan on standing there until your ankles swell up. Expect to see groups of floor people standing around doing nothing. They are the ones who are in charge of making sure that the merchandise bins are empty, items are in the wrong bins, and puting the little kiosks in the aisle so that two carts can't pass. And while I'm at it, why is the item you want always in the aisle that's closed with the orange expanding gate for two hours? I did get even one time. Went through the self-check, paid cash and was supposed to get fifteen cents back. Nothing came out so I got a "Sales Associate" who said there must be a coin stuck in the chute. She shoved a pencil up the chute and about seven dollars in change came down. I picked it up and thanked her for her help. Better than the casino!

I can understand your frustration Rez.....but......what did you expect? I go in there with low expectations, and I'm rarely disappointed.
In the end, one way or the other, you get what you pay for. Coincidently I just bought 28 sq of OC 30's in charcoal yesterday. I was sitting on the tailgate of my truck eating a sandwich during break. I called and said "Hi Mike, I need 28 sq of OC 30's in charcoal tomorrow at XX MuckYuck St in Jobtown... thanks". At 7:30 this morning a boom truck was on my job setting the shingles down on the roof. They were the right color. They weren't damaged. And other than pushing a few buttons on my phone, I didn't lift a finger. I'll pay for them in about 28 days.
I paid a couple bucks more per bundle than you did..... but I still feel like I got what I paid for. Don't you? :)

I guess I'm weird, but it's not always about money for me. I value relationships that I've had for decades with suppliers. They have taken care of me long before the boxes came to our area, so why would I switch loyalties for a dollars difference on a bundle of shingles. That is less than $100 for a whole roof. Do the boxes even have boom or conveyor trucks that can hit a two story roof? Saving $100 to end up with a pile of shingles on the ground is just plain stupid. Try carrying 90 bundles up a ladder. Plus, the time you spend dealing with the store ordering the shingles - maybe an hour or so - you've blown your savings on labor. I can call my supplier while I'm eating breakfast and I'll have the shingles on the roof by the end of the day. If I didnt have an account I could just give the driver a check.
And speaking of principles - why would you want to give your hard earned dollars to some corporate monster. I doubt most of their employees even get a wage you could live on. I deal with two lumber yards, a roofing and siding supplier, and a masonry materials supplier - they have people working in the yard, drving the trucks that were there when I started my business 18years ago - that tells you something about how they are paid and how the commissions are spread out amongst their employees. I'd rather my money stay in the local economy.
FInally, I'm not even going to get into the inferior lines of tools and materials that are produced specifically for Lowes and the Depot - by name brand manufactures, mind you, that end up getting squeezed into cheapening their products because of the buying power of the boxes. My electrical subcontractor buys all his supplies from Home Depot - I've had four non-functional GFI's in the past year on my jobs - something I can't ever remember happening 10 years ago. Thankfully, my plumbing subcontractor will not install any fixtures purchased at these places - a few of my customers gripe a bit over this, but in the end they go to a plumbing supplier. I stand buy him on this as his stance is that he will spend more of his labor dealing with the problems and missing parts that are standard with that crap.
Welcome!how is it that you have been here for a year and waited 'till now to get busy typing?Good post!

They have taken care of me long before the boxes came to our area, so why would I switch loyalties for a dollars difference on a bundle of shingles."I agree and I don't think I'm weird. But that's another thread. Here in my area there are tons of small building supply houses and even larger companies like ABC, which is where I buy all our roofing and siding supplies.I pick up the phone, the person on the other end has my purchase history, knows my name and can understand what I'm ordering. I also don't hear, "Oh, hang on, lemme get you to hardware." or "Oh, hang on, let me connect you to lumber." or even worse, "What's that?"I also don't pay for deliveries, with the exception of long runs that might be out of their area. And even then, their additional charge usually amounts to 20 or 30 bucks. Or just order from a yard closer. I use a few different yards, depending on the area. Far better than the 65 or more for the big boxes. And the product is stacked correct, checked and when I call about a problem, the person on the other end of the line is motivated to get it solved, pronto.Everyone goes to H.D. or the other one (which I've yet never been in) occasionally for some little thing here and there. You forgot a board, or need a box of screws. I get a headache everytime I am in there more than 10 minutes. The self serve check-out makes the experience a little better, as I know it speeds my release from their hell.Oh and around here the pro desk means only two things in my experience: "How can I screw up your order?" or "Can I sell you a revolving credit account?"
I have been sorta defending HD in a few threads, since I have been installing cabinets for them...but, today I told them to go pound sand!
I told them that if they did not pay me for some extra work I had done (trying to please their customers), I would not do anymore work for them. The manager said they would get another installer then. I said good, I quit!

they doubled the price the next day...and has since doubled again... sure wish i'd got 20,000ft of 12-2 mc @$65 roll at the time

Guaranteed Low Prices The Home Depot guarantees the lowest prices on everything we carry. Because our prices are already low, we do not offer additional contractors' discounts. However, if you should find a lower price from a legitimate, local competitor on an identical item we stock -(en dash please) even if it's an "advertised special," we'll not only meet that price. We'll also beat it by 10% to thank you for bringing it to our attention. (Our low price guarantee excludes closeouts, liquidations and clearance items). Simply bring in a copy of the advertisement or other proof of the competitor's price. If you find a lower price from a competitor on the Internet on an identical item we stock, please print the product/item page (including applicable taxes and shipping) and take it to the store nearest you for verification. We'll be glad to match the Internet price. (This offer excludes closeouts, liquidations, and clearance items.).
" We'll be glad to match the Internet price. "ROTFLMAOI got a flyer in the mail from them and went in to stock up on some item I use a lot of.They said - this is our online store - we can't meet that price here in the store...Goodbye then
Welcome to the Taunton University of Knowledge FHB Campus at Breaktime. where ... Excellence is its own reward!
"They said - this is our online store - we can't meet that price here in the store..."I got that response also.Actually the person at the customer service desk said that they would match it, but I had to go to returns. At returns they questioned it and by this time the guy a new person was at the CS desk. The manager also refused. So I PRINTED it out. And also found a cheaper online source.Even with the printed out policy the store manager still was reluctant and calling regional managers, etc.
if it didn't switch for you then they fixed after my guy spent 2 hours on the phone with their customer service guy... it even did it on him while on the phone with my guy... the call stemmed from the manager telling me it was store policy to only match and not give the extra 10% on commodity items... ie wire sheetrock lumber ect... i was buy'n wire #6 500ft spools lowes was $225rl vs HD $274rl same brand ect.. I informed the manager "not what your sign says" he told me "I've never read the sign" he was a total A-Hole... and this was one place in time when i wasn't (an A-hole) just match'n the price took over 90 min.. anyway i was back at the store at lunch get'n my 10% back... seems the corp guy called and told manager guy he was WRONG... was a principle involved... it was all about the money
p
Last month I needed some 6/3. Lowes was about 50 cents a foot less than HD. Lowes was out of 6/3. Went to HD and told em Lowes price. The guy says, "do they have any?" . Not enough I say. He gives it to me for the price Lowes had. I guess it's just who you deal with and their attitude.
I told the my experience with internet price matching in another message. But all of my experiences with Lowes was the oposite.A number of years ago Lowes was getting rid of the line of Jet tools and replacing them with Jet Homeline series. And when the Jet distributors was reseting the stores old in box goods was being returned but displays where sold off at a price set by corporate and it was about 40% of list IIRC.News of this circulated on the internet to everyone but the stores. The stores did not know the details until they got the reset. And there was a lot of confusion about the price so someone even posted the contact in corporate that had set the price. At that time there was no Lowes in the immedate area. So I called around and found a store about 90 miles away that had a Jet bandsaw deisplay unit.Called several times and talked to the tool deptment manager and all he knew was that he was getting the Jet reset in a week or two. After calling in for the 3rd in about 8 days he transfered me to the store manager. The store manager wanted to deal and gave me a good price, about 60%. But when I mentioned the going price he bulked and said that he couldn't do that, it was well below his cost.I asked if he had talked to corporate (I had already mentioned this to the tool manager). He said no and that there was not way that price could right. Now he was very polite and nice about, it you could tell in his voice think how can he get rid of this nut.About 2 hours later he called back after talking to corporate. Now I had not called and complained or anything. Again he was very nice, but this time he was asking when I could come to get it and that they had put a reserved sign on it.

Reputation? Who cares about reputation! We're HD and we're bigger than everybody else. We don't need to worry about our reputation. We may not get a lot of repeats, but there will always be new customers. It's not because our reputation that they call us, it's because of our market presence.
And we don't need installers who care. We need installers who can bang it out and get on to the next job. Installers who make the extra effort are probably only trying to make a name for themselves anyway. They sure aren't focused on our number 1 priority... making money.
You wanna walk? Go ahead. We'll just find a cheaper human.

P.S. I hope I don't really have to say this, but my comments above highly facetious.
They do think of install services as a new cash machine in the race to grow profits. Too bad they don't understand that the foundation of a service business is reputation and slick marketing can't create a good reputation.Service businesses depend on the repeat customer and referrals from happy customers...HD just doesn't get it. Actually, most contractors don't get it either.

Seen any ads for "quality built" tract homes by the national builders? It's all marketing and people buy 'em up like hotcakes.
A home is just a big retail purchase. The tradework HD and others are selling are services for homeowners. This year the HO wants flooring, next year new window coverings installed, five years later--a new roof. High potential for repeat business...or NOT.Good retail businesses are good at service too (not just sales & marketing). I contend that while fairly important, even in retail--service is not just important for tradespeople (and businesses that provide them)...it IS the business.I think I'd dump HD stock...they pin too much on growing the install service program...the culture there is antiservice. Not a good combination.
I'm mainly a do it yourselfer type homeowner. I use HD sometimes, but usually use Lowes since they are vastly better than the local HD. They are made for people like me.
But If I were a pro, I'd not be using a company that tries to undercut my business with shoddy install work by underpaid subs. I'd pay more for good service.
I'm like Rez, save a buck or two, I'm buying there. If they make me mad, I'll leave a cartload at the checkout and walk.
No Lowes here yet. HD install prices don't undercut anyone though...they are typically more expensive by a fair margin. I never had a complaint about the pay rate either (it was better than most builders pay for cabinet installs). I made $46.50/hour installing cabinets for HD, they charged the customer $81/hr. You would have to look pretty hard to find many cabinet installers billing out that high. They ain't cheap. Cabinets are overpriced too.I just got fed up with the hassles and turnover. No way to have a good working relationship when the staff keeps changing every few months. One person would make me a promise, then they leave and the next in line says, "I can't do anything about that." Everyone was scared to make a decision or stand for anything. They couldn't see far enough to spend a dime to save a dollar.

Not a bad idea.Hope you didn't mind my hijack of your thread...my rant fit your title pretty well though (so I just tagged along).
Here's the anti-rant to your rant... There was the time i needed 28 square of archy shingles and HD was the best price...and free home delivery...and 'home' was 35 miles from the store. A boom truck showed up on time with three guys, one to run the boom and two young men to distribute the shingles just where i specified. I gave them a $20 tip for beers after work and said thank-you very much.I do not expect to get my hand held at HD. The clerk at the Pro-Desk, in fact, did not know what i meant by "starter shingle strip" and in fact told me archy shingles don't even need starter shingles at all. Oh, really?! No biggie, only one of us needs to know what she is doing. And no one at HD has ever asked me to send my husband in next time.Harumph. <various smilies>
Well Heck. They didn't get to be the worlds second largest retailer without doing a few things right. I used to be a lonely voice here, defending HD. A mixed bag for sure. They just really got my undies in a bunch this week...so I have little respect left for my (almost) local store. Good people in almost every organization, and a few really well managed HD stores I'd reckon.I don't know any similies for Harumph. ; )
>>>>>No biggie, only one of us needs to know what she is doing. This is true and why I don't have much problem at the boxes unless I'm working a little out of my trade. At least one person has to have a clue.

At 7:15 this morning I visited HD, tropical storm Enersto was in full effect and I was one of two customers in the store. When I left the store I noticed that all of the parking spaces adjacent to the store were being used by HD employees. If this doesn't say arrogant incompetence with mangement I don't know what would. I parked 7 or 8 spaces back thinking the store was busy. I called the manger and he said he didn't realize this happened. Idiots!!

You can't blame that on the managr. It's what he did after he was notified that counts.

Fast Eddie,
I would bet money that the managers car was right in the front, this being the first time I have been in a HD with no other customers, I never knew,I doubt it was the first time the manager was in early and didn't notice employees parking at the front. For Gods sake it's a huge shopping weekend and this is the poorest run HD on earth. I have asked employees at this store to move so I could shop, they are that oblivious to customers. A Lowes is being built less than a half mile away so screw them. If you ran a retail store , would you allow 40 employees to park in all the front spaces?

Cheltenham, PA gets my vote for poorest ran HD.
the local lowes (and the home depot, i think) has a blue line painted across the parking lot, about 10-12 rows out. employees who park inside the blue line are subject to sanctions.
OK...I'm ducking but....I LIKE HOME DEPOT!
i know what to expect. I go in there with my list which are usually punch list items. I write my list in the order of the first to last isles. Yep, I know the stores backwards and forwards.I work my way from electrical to building which is where I park my truck.
I talk to no one..ask no one in the orange vests a question because most of them don't know a whole lot. Why would they be working there??? Starving I guess. I mean would you ask the cashier at the supermarket how to make dinner for ten? Same thing.
Anyway...I'm able to save myself lots of time by not having to travel all over town to fill my punch list. Gas and time costs money too...really.
I even saved over a thousand dollars recently buying 500 2x2 clear cedar baluster material.
And that was after I paid for delivary.I JUST returned all the twisted and checked pieces yesterday after having them sit in my shop for a year...no problem taking them back and giving me my money back. I LOVE THAT! I was JUST at my local yard picking out some front porch columns.
I needed four. They had a new delivery of about 100 posts sitting in the building. I took four but when I got home I didn't care for them seeing them up(still in shrink wrap). I brought them back for an exchange. I took them out of my van and put them neatly back on the pile. They charged me about $20 per column for a restocking fee and they wouldn't budge. F them! Duchebuckets!! They could care less about me as huge delivery trucks leave their yard constantly...one after the other. So now I shop at a lumber yard thats a little more expensive but a whole nicer experience. If I need a substantial amt of a single material and the lumber yard I don't care for has it cheaper I'll get it from them only using a phone and taking delivery......you just need to know all your options and go from there and know what to expect or not expect...duh.
I know where and when to shop. Geezzz...how long do you have to be doing this to not get at least that right?
Home Depot also keeps the lumber yards in check. I don't know if you remember pre HD when the lumber yards were getting kinda full of themselves...only game in town kinda thing.
Don't worry...there will always be something to ruin your day somewhere...so : )
I once saw this picture online a ways back that for some reason always cheers me up. Its a pic of a smokin' hot lady and under it it says, "she's pissin' someone off somewhere". I donno...just thought I'd throw that in...

I don't love them or hate them, sounds like you do a lot of too much also.

When I need all roofing, I use a roofing supplier.
When I need all plbg, I use my plbg supplier.
When I need all elec, I use my elec supplier.
etc.
etc.
When I need to do a all about job or a punchlist situation, I go to the people who have all the stuff I can get in one place. And I know what I'm dealing with, not a relationship, advice, or some great bargain. Just one place to go get what I know I need to get my job done, pay for it and go on my way.

I know your in the land of Menards as I was once myself, and will be again soon.
I used to think, "oh God, cant wait until a HD or Lowes build in the area", well they both finally showed up and all of a sudden Menards wasnt the worst place in the world to go!

The Menards in Winona, MN is a good one. I installed the new kitchen showrooms for them. I preferred them to HD (even before HD irked me). I do get plenty of work from Menards, though they do not really set up installs ("we are your supplier not your competitor").The Menards management has treated me well. I'm working on a bid to put cabinets and counters in for the paint department. I did mention to a manager at the Menards store, that they have too much turnover in kitchens=screw-ups on orders. Did this for the local Menards (with help from BT...the rope was driving me crazy):

Nice work. The rope looks great.
Different mindset working w/ prefinished trim.
be heck of a tagline...
Yup slippery stuff. <g>
How did that happen. Lowes bought them a couple of years ago.
""I can't believe this.""
""heh heh""
""WE'RE TALKING LITTLE HOMEOWNER BOY HERE GUYS!""
""C'mon, not everyone who posts here have houses in various states of construction and have need of daily suppliers. Most larger builders go out of the area and haul in their stuff.""
""yaknow what? HomeDepot SUCKS!""
Come on now Rez. With the title of this thread and your last post, what the heck are you complaining about? You obviously have enough time on your hands to drive back and forth and back and forth and according to you, you have no choice but to shop at HD. With all that said, why/what the hell are you complaining about?
I've said this before and I'll say it again, why do people post these threads complaining about HD when you know you’re almost guaranteed to have a problem? Is it just to rant a little?

Next time, if you really need the possible discount, get a quote for the materials you want.
Then go price shopping.
Then they can't change the price.
People at the Pro Desk can change the price (to a point) in the computer, but the price won't change if you have a cashier scan the item.
Just keep in mind that there are things they will not price match- things like drywall board and studs. They usually won't match landscape blocks, either. It has to be the "exact same" item. Whether or not they will price match is determined by the Store Manager.
Some managers do not care about your money, others do. Making a big scene (as suggested by others here) only makes you look like a fool and provide hours of entertainment for the employees that witness it.
