Whats the deal with electric yard tools like string trimmers, hedge clippers etc – they come with the stupid short cord so you fight having the extenson cord come loose.
What wrong with a yard tool, with say a 8 ft cord, so the connection to the ext cord is on the ground??

Because the connection is on the ground.
My trimmer has zero lenght cord. The plug in molded in. But there is a hook where you can loop the cord around so that won't pull out.
On my electric chainsaw with the short cord I make it part of a figure 8 knot.
They're short so you cant cut them off with the tool.
'cause they don't know how long your yard is!
Even with an 8' cord.....you'll still most likely be running it off a 100' cord......
so why should they bother with the extra cost of that extra 7.5' cord.....when you're still gonna plug it into an extension....
That's all purely a guess...but it makes sense to me....
as does the "keeps the connection off the ground" too....
They might be doing ya a favor there...aside from the water/electrocution deal....
It'd be pretty hard to cut the tool cord if it's 6" long ....and extension caords are cheaper and easier to replace if ya do.

You guys are great! And sooo smart.
I always thought it was so you did'nt have to get too far from the beer cooler on the porch.
That's what i love about this forum....Great wisdom.
Oh, but now I will actually have to get off the porch.
But seriously, there are a bunch of great guys and gals here.View Image
I tie a knot in the cord so the plug doesn't become disconnected.
