Interior-Trim Transitions: Baseboard-to-Stair-Skirtboard Details
Tucker Windover shows an alternative way to make a clean connection between a thin baseboard and wider staircase trim.
A lot of times with a staircase we are trying to transition a ¾-in. skirtboard into a 5/8-in. one-piece baseboard. This transition between the stairs and the base gets a little bit awkward. The underside of the skirtboard will have a base cap that needs to meet the cap on the actual baseboard.
There are a couple of ways to deal with this. One thing we can do is add a triangular block below the skirtboard that allows the base cap of the baseboard and base cap under the skirtboard to terminate independent of each other. The block fits flush to the skirtboard while the baseboard sits behind the triangular block with a slight reveal.
Another way to do this is to use a two-piece baseboard made of ¾-in. stock to match the skirtboard, Then, the custom two-piece base can meet the thinner speed base at an inside corner behind the stairs where the transition will be barely noticeable. This video shows how this is done.
