Build a Grade-Level Deck: Joists and Hardware
Builder Mike Guertin installs joist hangers before placing joists and connecting them to the main deck frame.
In this episode, Mike will:
- Use a simple jig made of wire and a scrap of framing lumber to accurately install joist hangers
- Position and fasten joists securely and efficiently using a hardware nailer
- Install a lateral-load connector between new deck joists and existing house joists
- Use ThruLOK fasteners (instead of 1/2-in. bolts) to add the second layer of the double rim joist
